This time I called the Metro sales line on Saturday morning, they asked about the port #, and when I explained it was a virtual carrier I was quite vehemently told by the rep that they absolutely cannot port Google Voice numbers. I prodded, asked when this was changed. She said she don't know, maybe years. I said I sincerely doubted that because I had done the very same GV > Metro port a few years ago, and I asked (politely) to be transferred if they didn't know how. They said "this comes from my whole team."
I asked her to Google search being able to do it or searching her own knowledge base; she refused. I then asked if she could try to walk through the whole purchase and porting process with me, just for giggles. To her credit, she did! My credit card failed to be processed for no clear reason (I'd say she mistyped but I got the bad payment URL when I tried to purchase online, and my card was working literally everywhere else all weekend), then we switched to debit, that worked, and then I gave her the GV 10-digit number as the "account number", then the 4-digit GV voicemail PIN as the transfer PIN, and waited, and waited... And she was able to successfully port from GV. In the case of this particular customer service rep, she was glad and said she had never done that before and learned something new.
So it's still possible as of 2026-05-02, but it did take an hour to get there!
Now I just have to remember how I can most efficiently get the phone off their $55/mo plan and onto Mint Mobile (also T-Mobile owned) for the cheaper plan...
We're weren't able to connect with your carrier to get your number reserved. Please continue with a new number, or visit a store to complete your number transfer. Promotions may vary in-store.
Any ideas?
