FYI, but a new Apple TV was supposed to launch soon, at least according to rumors. https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/
This is NOT a recommendation for or against buying one, but rather a heads up just so that no one is surprised IF the new model is released shortly after making a purchase.

All of the things you hate about it are the reason I was happy to pay a premium for it. It's extremely fast for a smart TV box and doesn't have any junk like branded buttons or ads on screen. The only reason I don't have them on all my TVs yet is because of the rumored updated version but that rumor has been going on so long that I might just grab these at this price

Once you understand that you cannot claim those three months if you had claimed them previously with another Apple product, it doesn't.

Already sold out? I get this error when trying to add it to my cart: "We're sorry, the item cannot be added to cart at this time. Please try again later."

This thing is an excellent Plex client. Maybe only the Nvidia shield tv pro is better, but that's debatable
Wait till you try Infuse...!

Once you understand the purchase includes three months of free AppleTV and Apple Music it makes the price of a $100 a significant bargain. I have a Roku Ultra but it sits in a box now as the AppleTV is better on so many fronts from dreamy screensavers to huge bandwidth and lots of extra features.
Why is so much better?

I literally bought 2 last time they were at this price. One at Costco and one at Best Buy. After trying desperately to force myself to like them, I returned the Costco one. Still have the other. It's basically brand new and still in its box for months now, after multiple attempts to try and like it when I first got it. Didn't work with continue watching with Netflix. Doesn't support live TV unless you use an app (ie no free google tv channels, no dvr compatibility with YTTV). I bought a silicone remote condom for it within a couple of days because the remote is too angular. No quick buttons on the remote to load streaming apps. The only appeal of it is aesthetic with the much vaunted "buttery smooth" interface, which is completely moot since you use that 1% of the time to simply select an app and then you're watching a show and it's absolutely irrelevant. Disrecommended. I got an Onn Plus 4K, installed Projectivy and haven't looked back.
"Didn't work with continue watching with Netflix." - how so? If true, this sounds more a Netflix app problem than an Apple TV issue.

Agree about the remote, it's an ergonomic fail. And actually there are issues with the UI where sometimes the picture is zoomed and info is offscreen and/or navigation is unresponsive, and I've had to power cycle to recover.

The other disappointment for me was the app ecosystem. I assumed it was a significant subset of what's available for iOS, at least for major apps, but it's just a sliver. Screen sharing from an iPad works, but it's clunky.

I agree but wouldn't they have released it prior to the holiday season?
Not if they still have a lot of the last version to sell.

Me and my friends have tried Apple TV 4K, it doesn't perform as well as onn 4k pro or Shield tv pro when streaming Plex it stutters all the time. Otherwise, the interface is great.

This is tempting but I'm still happy with my 2017 1st gen 4k model. Is there any significant reason to upgrade?

The only thing I can think of is a better remote, but my TV remote can be used with the Apple TV so that's not an issue really.
i'm still rocking the same 1st gen 4k, but recently the "USA Network" app stopped working, and i use it regularly. does yours still work for this app? i'm tempted to buy this 3rd gen.
