This is a good deal. I bought a few of these for our living room and kitchen last spring at $38 a piece (different generic brand, but same thing). We have large south facing windows and during the summer our unit just can't keep up (despite multiple HVAC tech visits saying there was nothing wrong). The airflow was always too weak and on 100+ temp days, the coolest it would get was 75/76, even though it was set at 72. These worked perfectly and kept our rooms at temp.

Good option if you have a room that doesn't get enough airflow. Wish I had this as a kid.

It's just a fan that sits in the register? So it increases air flow into that room, but steals it from everywhere else? Because it doesn't create more flow from the HVAC blower...

Yeah, instead redo the larger duct for the far side of the room, this can help to pull some more cool air for that room.

Not sure how safe to keep it on all the time.

These work great for houses that have 1 zone or even 2 zones for rooms that don't get cold or hot enough before the main system turns off. I have 2 of these in 2 different rooms. They have built in temperature sensors, that can continue working after the HVAC system has shut off, still pulling in cold or hot air that's in the register. They are super quiet and pretty slick aside from the cord that hands to the side, i push mine under the baseboards, so they stay out of the way, i do wish they were flat as well though.

If these are similar to the other register fan styles that basically use computer case fans, I don't agree with these things being quiet unless you have them on the lower settings. On higher settings, the fan hinun is quite apparent even from a few feet away. I recommend it only if you have a larger room or so you are further away from the register to hear it.

My concern is the temp sensor being in the register, closer to the source of the cold air. This causes it to read colder then the room is and is therefore less accurate.

Can mitigate this by dynamically adjusting its set temp based on another temp sensor in the room center

It might be good for a room on the other side of your house (vs your air handler / furnace) that doesn't get enough airflow because of the long or undersized duct work.

FWIW this claims 120 CFM and your standard blower is providing 400 CFM per ton. For example a 3 ton system is 1200 total airflow (by default). This isn't likely going cause any noticeable change for the rest of the house but might make that odd room in your house that is always too hot / too cold slightly more bearable. Especially if you had a bonus room where someone just spliced into the existing duct work when finishing it. Those tend to never have enough airflow.

P.S. I'm considering buying this for my laundry room with a HP water heater in it. The room turns into a cooler when the heat pump is running so this (in theory) could help balance the air to the adjoining rooms even if the HVAC system is off.
