The M1 Pro chip is still an extremely capable chip in 2025; even the base M1 is great. Unless you're doing a lot of high-compute tasks, you're unlikely to notice a significant difference in performance compared to the M4. The multi-core performance of the M4 is only around 30% better than the M1 Pro (8).
The only area where the M4 would dramatically outperform the M1 Pro is the neural engine, but I don't think most people are running local LLMs on their MacBooks.
Despite its age, this is still a very capable machine with a solid 3+ years left in it at this point for most folks, and will still best many similarly (or higher) priced new Windows laptops in many regards - battery life/efficiency in particular. That's just how far ahead of their time the M1 & M1 Pro devices were when they launched (AMD & Intel were busy pushing power limits through the roof to compete with one another - which is an awful approach for mobile computing).
...and for those that are saying 'get an Air instead' - sure, that's an option... but these things have significantly better displays and audio, if that's an important factor.
Community Reviews
This 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro stands out for its mini LED display, strong speakers, and workstation cooling, making it especially appealing for media, editing, and desktop replacement use. The chip still feels fast for everyday work, with plenty of headroom for Parallels, VMs, Docker, and other heavier tasks, and the 16GB and 512GB configuration is viewed as practical for most users. The main concern is refurbished condition, especially battery cycles, cosmetic wear, and unknown internal wear. The return window and included Allstate warranty help reduce that risk, and the current price is widely framed as strong value if the battery is decent.
Common Questions (5)
For everyday use, the M1 Pro still feels very close to newer M3/M4 machines, with the biggest gains showing up in render, compile, audio editing, VM, and Docker workloads. The M4 is faster on CPU and neural tasks, but the M1 Pro remains a very capable desktop-replacement chip.
Battery condition is the main refurb risk because cycle count and health can vary a lot, and a worn battery can be a meaningful extra cost. Reported examples range from about 84% to 94% health, with battery replacement pricing discussed around $199-$249, so checking the return window and battery report matters.
Yes. The 16-inch Pro has a larger mini-LED display, better screen quality, stronger speakers, and active cooling that helps it avoid Air-style throttling under heavier loads.
Yes: the listing was described as having 30-day returns with seller-paid return shipping plus a 1-year Allstate warranty. That reduces the risk because a bad unit can be returned, and the warranty covers failures after purchase.
Condition can range from mint to visibly used: examples include minor edge dings, scratches, shiny keycaps, debris under the keyboard, and battery health around 85%-91%. Some units arrived immaculate with a great screen, so the safest expectation is used cosmetic wear but working hardware.

You're also acting like your annoyance that some people listen to speakers in public is a reason people should ALWAYS use headphones, even if there's no one else around.
You have a nice machine with new battery, and plenty of storage and ram. Me? I use like 1/3 of 512gb so I have no need to go above and beyond.
I say if you happy with price, rock it. They are great
That said, if you did snag a 600 dollar m1 16 inch pro, it's amazing deal. I paid 1100 after tax 2 years ago and I still feel it's worth it today. Would I pay 1100 today? No that's m2/m3 pro pricing now a days on deep cuts.
Really all that matters is your use. My m1 is a home boy, it sits on table, I occasionally take it somewhere if I have a long multi hour wait like a car repair.
M1 Pro 16 and 15 air new m4. The m4 if on a deep cut is great. You also get a new battery and a fresh warranty, which does have merit too. Since batteries are 200 bucks, if you are in need of all day away from wall plug. Me? After 2 years my battery still last all day, but my m1 was Apple refurbed so had a new battery. We don't know the health of these. So you could be 200 deep in new battery if you wanted like fresh life
Idk where I'm going w this, eitherway. Run it
If mine got stolen today, I'd prob grab 15 air because they are nice and light. The weight does get to you if you use it a lot. But at home no biggie. It has enough juice to handle whatever I'd throw at it, including game emulation
General use case, most people would prefer what you have, especially if you are moving it. It's also new.
For 1100 I would try to pick up a minimum 32gb M2/M3 pro, or maybe even a M1 Max. If you're going used/refurb the ram is what really makes the deal, IMO.

Like what!?! It's actually a very big plus to me, I love music and use them often
For those considering M1 Pro for something like this, I think the most important thing you need to consider is the possibilty of battery replacement or the amount of RAM you might actually need.
My use on this has been pretty low until recently, I'm at 97% battery capacity with about 37 cycles. I use a magic keyboard & trackpad. But recently I started to crank up a 48GB VM and finally got to see "Memory Pressure" of yellow for a while, but the this is a beast, comparable to my 7950x desktop in real work. My VM is off on a Sandisk Extreme SSD, so I'm saving all the Disk R/W off the laptop, and I have access to a home network NFS, so storage really isn't a limiting issue.
I recently look at the battery replacment (through DYI Apple KIT + Apple Parts), Apple want you to "remove the top" and basically replace keyboard + Battery in one go and the price is like $550. I know you can probably just replace battery itself, but I don't know if Apple will just sell you the M1 battery.
Because of this, I am planning to keep my AppleCare for annual fee of about $135 next March, when it comes up for renewal.
Just some things to think about.
One thing to consider is the M1 Pro (Max) 16 inch is heavy. Not a big deal if you're using it as a desktop replacement that's not moving around much, but it really does have quite a bit of heft.
Enjoy your M1 Pro if you get it. I don't think I will be upgrading my M1 Max for anything Apple has for quite a while..

Pro w this is if they break laptop, they'd replace it with new unit. Actually had them fully replace mine when they blew up my 12 inch MacBook Air lol.
...and yes, I still have AC+ on it because to replace it with a new one with 64GB RAM is damn near $4000.

Ie. It was like 1299 but I bought from Best Buy for 800.
When they broke it, the battery expanded and such. And the 12 inch was misery I guess to replace battery.
They gave me 1299 I could use it towards any laptop I wanted, or do exact swap for the next model
I got a free upgrade from 12 inch 8/256 to the 14 or 15 inch air at that time. I could of paid money to upgrade to 16gb ram etc whatever
They went off the price of the laptop, the msrp. Even though my 12 was discontinued
Big fan of air's is why I said to guy above, if it works keep it. I was a college student and the air did everything I needed, except 12 inch model felt like I was typing on a pizza box lmao
The 12 inch tho was a piece of marvel really, it was insanely compact

Because when it comes to actual battery size, the MB Pro M1 Pro 16" has a 99.6 Whr battery whereas the new M4 MBA has a 66.5 Whr battery.
Also, the warranty being better, it's just that the one year warranty with a new one is from Apple vs. Allstate, right? Or does Apple have some sort of an extended protection beyond 1 yr (e.g., maybe 3yrs for battery or something)?
