This 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro stands out for its mini LED display, strong speakers, and workstation cooling, making it especially appealing for media, editing, and desktop replacement use. The chip still feels fast for everyday work, with plenty of headroom for Parallels, VMs, Docker, and other heavier tasks, and the 16GB and 512GB configuration is viewed as practical for most users. The main concern is refurbished condition, especially battery cycles, cosmetic wear, and unknown internal wear. The return window and included Allstate warranty help reduce that risk, and the current price is widely framed as strong value if the battery is decent.

And yet, all but the most basic headphones will beat laptop speakers. Some people feel the need to annoy others with their speakers, like with their phones. Headphones are great inventions, I think there's a few deals on SD for them recently too!
Dude, just stop. You're beating a dead horse. Not everyone's needs & preferences are the same as yours. Stop acting like your own personal perspective is the only one that exists.
You're also acting like your annoyance that some people listen to speakers in public is a reason people should ALWAYS use headphones, even if there's no one else around.

Just picked up a MacBook Air M4 for $919 new after PayPal "Pay in 4" with a 15" screen, 512 GB, 16 GB RAM and wondering if I made a mistake after reading all the praise for even the older MacBook Pros. Wonder if this would be better? Too late to get a good price on the M5 14" anymore...
If you are happy with the price, stick with it. The con is M1 Pro is older, so you will have so many years left of os.

You have a nice machine with new battery, and plenty of storage and ram. Me? I use like 1/3 of 512gb so I have no need to go above and beyond.

I say if you happy with price, rock it. They are great

That said, if you did snag a 600 dollar m1 16 inch pro, it's amazing deal. I paid 1100 after tax 2 years ago and I still feel it's worth it today. Would I pay 1100 today? No that's m2/m3 pro pricing now a days on deep cuts.

Really all that matters is your use. My m1 is a home boy, it sits on table, I occasionally take it somewhere if I have a long multi hour wait like a car repair.

M1 Pro 16 and 15 air new m4. The m4 if on a deep cut is great. You also get a new battery and a fresh warranty, which does have merit too. Since batteries are 200 bucks, if you are in need of all day away from wall plug. Me? After 2 years my battery still last all day, but my m1 was Apple refurbed so had a new battery. We don't know the health of these. So you could be 200 deep in new battery if you wanted like fresh life

Idk where I'm going w this, eitherway. Run it

If mine got stolen today, I'd prob grab 15 air because they are nice and light. The weight does get to you if you use it a lot. But at home no biggie. It has enough juice to handle whatever I'd throw at it, including game emulation

There are some tasks that are better, for sure. If you wanted to stream live for instance with heavier cpu/gpu tasks at the same time, the throttling on a fanless MacBook Air would be a dealbreaker.

General use case, most people would prefer what you have, especially if you are moving it. It's also new.

For 1100 I would try to pick up a minimum 32gb M2/M3 pro, or maybe even a M1 Max. If you're going used/refurb the ram is what really makes the deal, IMO.

He's just looking for confrontation. But that said I can't believe he said the 16 pro speakers are tinny

Like what!?! It's actually a very big plus to me, I love music and use them often

Let me say first I have a M1 Max 64GB/512GB bought about about 5 months after release, and I have AppleCare Coverage on it. I bought it primary to run high RAM based VM, and ARM VM really haven't matured until recently (in my view).

For those considering M1 Pro for something like this, I think the most important thing you need to consider is the possibilty of battery replacement or the amount of RAM you might actually need.

My use on this has been pretty low until recently, I'm at 97% battery capacity with about 37 cycles. I use a magic keyboard & trackpad. But recently I started to crank up a 48GB VM and finally got to see "Memory Pressure" of yellow for a while, but the this is a beast, comparable to my 7950x desktop in real work. My VM is off on a Sandisk Extreme SSD, so I'm saving all the Disk R/W off the laptop, and I have access to a home network NFS, so storage really isn't a limiting issue.

I recently look at the battery replacment (through DYI Apple KIT + Apple Parts), Apple want you to "remove the top" and basically replace keyboard + Battery in one go and the price is like $550. I know you can probably just replace battery itself, but I don't know if Apple will just sell you the M1 battery.

Because of this, I am planning to keep my AppleCare for annual fee of about $135 next March, when it comes up for renewal.

Just some things to think about.

One thing to consider is the M1 Pro (Max) 16 inch is heavy. Not a big deal if you're using it as a desktop replacement that's not moving around much, but it really does have quite a bit of heft.

Enjoy your M1 Pro if you get it. I don't think I will be upgrading my M1 Max for anything Apple has for quite a while..

Apple will replace battery only. It's now 250 instead of 199, but it's been a year or two since I last looked

Pro w this is if they break laptop, they'd replace it with new unit. Actually had them fully replace mine when they blew up my 12 inch MacBook Air lol.

I'm curious what would happen if I needed to file an AC+ claim with my 14" M1 Max 64GB/2TB. Do they just have loads of those exact mainboards lying around in waiting, or would they 'upgrade' you to a newer gen model with the same RAM/storage config?

...and yes, I still have AC+ on it because to replace it with a new one with 64GB RAM is damn near $4000.

I just bought a used (but in virtually perfect like new condition, there are some minor marks on the screen, but you can't see them unless you're looking for it, and everything else is absolutely perfect) MB Pro 16 M1 Pro, 1TB, for $600... a week ago. FB Marketplace find. I already had a 14 inch M1 MB Pro, but wanted a larger screen for a while. The M1 Pro is still a very smooth and capable chip. I'm actually keeping my 14 inch and turning it into a spare desktop basically, and the 16 inch is my new every day and travel machine. Still years of life left in them.
Larger screen for old people like me and better speakers than 14in

Gave me store credit for my model

Ie. It was like 1299 but I bought from Best Buy for 800.

When they broke it, the battery expanded and such. And the 12 inch was misery I guess to replace battery.

They gave me 1299 I could use it towards any laptop I wanted, or do exact swap for the next model

I got a free upgrade from 12 inch 8/256 to the 14 or 15 inch air at that time. I could of paid money to upgrade to 16gb ram etc whatever

They went off the price of the laptop, the msrp. Even though my 12 was discontinued

Big fan of air's is why I said to guy above, if it works keep it. I was a college student and the air did everything I needed, except 12 inch model felt like I was typing on a pizza box lmao
The 12 inch tho was a piece of marvel really, it was insanely compact

That sounds decent. I'd be stoked to get MSRP of the M1 Max, lol... I think it was originally a ~$4200 config, but I only paid $2200 though a couple years ago on clearance

I thought this is outclassed significantly by m4 air but performance wise it's actually only off by 10-20% per geekbench. GPU performance neck and neck or slightly better. Actually a pretty good deal if you end up w a decent battery.

M4 MBA would have better CPU performance, better battery and new of course so a much better warranty. This still has a much better screen, a larger screen, faster GPU, more storage and is cheaper. For the right person, it can make sense.
I'm assuming you mean the M4 MBA would have a battery life, right? Only because the CPU draws much less power, the screen is smaller/less power hungry too, and the battery is newer than the MB Pro's battery?

Because when it comes to actual battery size, the MB Pro M1 Pro 16" has a 99.6 Whr battery whereas the new M4 MBA has a 66.5 Whr battery.

Also, the warranty being better, it's just that the one year warranty with a new one is from Apple vs. Allstate, right? Or does Apple have some sort of an extended protection beyond 1 yr (e.g., maybe 3yrs for battery or something)?

Yep, battery life will be better since the battery would be new. As for the warranty, Apple would be easier to work with, get repairs quicker, etc.

I can't say Allstate is bad because I've used Allstate warranties from Costco I believe and they've always fixed the stuff that I needed of them pretty effortless.

That said, Apple product, AppleCare is unbeatable

also a option, my visa signature doubles warranties1 year to 2 year. Or 2 to 3, adds 1 additional year

Costco comes w 2 year mfr warranty, so the cc adds 1 more
