My 11 year old is asking for one for Xmas, but don't know which to get.
What would be a good beginners (and then some) to get him?

Right now he can connect the launchkey to a macbook and use that for sound. Sometimes he would just like to flip a switch and play, so I was wondering if this would allow me to hook the launchkey up to speakers without a computer in between.

Can you speak to the differences between the Essential and the more expensive "non-Essential" Keylab which is $300 in this sale? ($550 normally) From a glance it appears the more expensive one is made of a metal and wood material and has a larger and color screen. Any other differences between them?
For a kid, they are going to need to learn a DAW app to use these and the pro ones can be challenging interfaces to learn. I'd suggest Garage Band to start with the concepts as it is simpler to learn and supports VST/AU instruments and it's free on Macs and iOS.
