One notice about the beatstep, when used as a controller, it sends strike pressure as velocity in note-on and then immediately sends pressure as aftertouch. This results in every tap having aftertouch whether or not you want it. Pads on newer devices like keylab and minilab behave differently. The initial strike pressure results in velocity but no aftertouch data is sent unless a subsequent increase in pressure is observed. This means no aftertouch unless you press down harder after the first strike. The newer approach allows for more controlled expression. The beatstep is built like a tank though. It is great if not using aftertouch.

Question:

My 11 year old is asking for one for Xmas, but don't know which to get.

What would be a good beginners (and then some) to get him?

TIA

EDIT: If it matters, he plays guitar and his younger brother plays the piano
Most of these play no sound. They are midi controllers. Not keyboards or synthesizers. Only the astrolab will play sound on its own. So a keylab will play no sound on its own unless you have software or a synthesizer hooked up to it.

I had the Keylab 61 in my cart for a couple days while thinking it over and now it is out of stock. $377 was a steal
I have keylab essential 49. I personally think that size is the sweet spot for controllers. It is large enough to play multiple octaves at once but small enough to move around easily and not take up a ton of space. There are octave up and down buttons to shift the key bed if needed.

Astrolab for $1k is a great deal, if I hadn't just gotten the Korg Opsix SE limited for $700 when they had their blowout I'd probably be on it.

My son already has a midi controller (novation launchkey). If I get the minifuse above, will that allow him to connect the launchkey to speakers without using a computer? Just turn on and play? Thanks.

What are you controlling? The midi controller doesn't make sounds on it's own.

Right now he can connect the launchkey to a macbook and use that for sound. Sometimes he would just like to flip a switch and play, so I was wondering if this would allow me to hook the launchkey up to speakers without a computer in between.

No, a midi controller won't be able to make sound on it's own. You need a synthesizer, something that takes midi, or in your case the macbook probably controlling a VST.

I think this controller is the best bang for the buck as it's not too big if limited on space, esp. for $150!
Can you speak to the differences between the Essential and the more expensive "non-Essential" Keylab which is $300 in this sale? ($550 normally) From a glance it appears the more expensive one is made of a metal and wood material and has a larger and color screen. Any other differences between them?
For a kid, they are going to need to learn a DAW app to use these and the pro ones can be challenging interfaces to learn. I'd suggest Garage Band to start with the concepts as it is simpler to learn and supports VST/AU instruments and it's free on Macs and iOS.
