This compact Anova Precision Cooker Mini is mainly praised as an easy entry into sous vide, with precise temperature control and solid results for steak, roast, lamb, eggs, and even reheating steak. The free app and Bluetooth control work without a subscription for basic use, and the $20 price with free shipping makes it feel like a strong starter deal. The main drawbacks are the app dependence, lack of physical controls, and the separate WiFi or full app subscription for extra features. It also needs a tall straight sided pot or container, so the mini name is a little misleading.

  • Home cooks making steak or roast, because it holds a precise water temperature for edge-to-edge doneness without overcooking.

  • Beginners trying sous vide for the first time, because it is a strong entry-level cooker at a very low price.

  • People who want to reheat steak, because it shines at bringing steak back up evenly.

  • Hosts cooking for dinner guests or holiday crowds, because it can run hands-off and scales well without using stove or oven space.

  • Cooks who want physical controls on the unit, because this model relies on the app for setup and has no temperature or timer buttons on the device.

  • Buyers who need app-free reliability, because the cooker can become unusable if app support ends or connectivity fails.

  • People who want to avoid recurring software fees, because full app features may require a subscription.

  • Owners planning to use small or curved pots, because the clamp needs a tall straight-sided vessel to mount properly.

I bought this recently, and just to clarify: a subscription is not required to use the sous vide. The app does promote a subscription, but one can navigate past it and use every function of the device without paying anything. It's a fully usable, no-cost experience as long as the app remains available.
It's on sale because it will be a brick soon

is there an opensource replacement to their app?
not having physical control stinks when there's a good chance of planned obsolescence/waste. Frown

So I went a did a little search, there is a home assistant integration, but I can't tell if you have to have the wifi subscription or if this model is compatible with the integration. So maybe

Why would you possibly need that? set the temperature, set a timer (preferably on your phone so you don't need to babysit), done. I really don't understand why Bluetooth and WIFI and an app enter the conversation with sous vide and trust me, I am a kitchen and tech gadget addict. I guess you could put veggies in the bath and then turn them on when leaving work? But again, Bluetooth seems to be the more common (and FREE in this case) in which you are limited to being home. I am wary of stuff like this with no actual hardware controls. What happens when the app flakes out or is no longer supported? A decent sous vide device will likely last you a long long time, I only use mine for steak typically, tried other stuff and wasn't impressed, even pork chops which I thought would be amazing since it is so easy to overcook pork with traditional methods.
Try it with chicken breasts or pork tenderloins. Steak is just the beginning my friend! 😂

This is the type of product that Cory Doctorow talks about in his new book Enshitification.

137 club, unite! Seriously, cook almost any beef you can find at 137 and give it a good (QUICK) sear after, and you'll never look at "high end" steakhouses the same again, you'll be your own at home.

Oh don't I know it! I ran a couple sirloins through there at 140.... Quick sear in a cast iron pan.... Not even a hint of gray, she was hot pink from edge to edge!

I have like 3 units. Gen 1 (colorish touch screen 1000w) Gen 2 digital numeric display). The gen 1 is a tank. You really need a big container to fully utilize it. Gen 2 was better, but still kinda large. Dedicated cook chambers for these are the way.

I'm hoping this one will be better. I ordered it, but the planned destruction of usability without a physical interface annoys me.
It will join the world of net connected zero software support.

I'm hoping that someone just makes a raspberry pi emulator so that Bluetooth and apks can be loaded. Between the companies going under and android having software phases out due to "incompatibility"

I only bought this one for travel.

What can you do without the full app?
You can control it with the free app and only thru the app. I have this as a backup, it works well but a tad annoying having to go get my phone to activate it. If you're looking for a cheap way into sous vide , this is about as good as it gets.

What do you use these for? I don't understand them. Does everything just taste like the restaurants where you boil your own food in front of yourself?
To further elaborate on one of the replys, if you use a cut of meat like chuck roast that takes long and slow to become tender you can toss it in the Ziploc or vaccum sealed bag and put it on super low for half a day then sear it and you have a super tender and relatively cheap steack

You vacuum seal the food, seasonings and whatnot and then it slow cooks it all together without any loss of flavor or nutrients. If you do a piece of meat, you would typically sear it after cooking in the sous vide.

They do a good job because a lot of other cooking options cause your flavors to get watered down or cooked off.
Among the seasonings is a hefty dose of micro plastics and offgassing flavor. Buy if you want to reduce your testosterone levels.

For those of you who have this, I read that it remembers the previous set temp. If I only want to use this for steaks and leave it at 134 degrees, could I theoretically just use the power on and off button and a kitchen thermometer (which I already have) and not have to use the app? Thinking of gifting to a young adult who only cooks steaks.

Last time I went grocery shopping the aisles were full of things in plastic. I'm not sure the sous vide is going to be the culprit here. I'm not even sure where to get meat that isn't already covered with or inside plastic. Do you have a butcher that uses paper?
