good Steam machine alternative and while not quite as compact it's actually a bit more powerful, available now, and bound to be cheaper once we see real prices

This is what I'd expect to pay for a very proprietry system like this. It's pretty good for an entry level system, but any upgrades will be a real pain. If you plan on upgrading, it's better to pay a touch more for one of the prebuilts that use off the shelf components, have bigger cases to fit in bigger GPU's and have better cooling.

where do you find such pre-builts, what are good and reputable brands in this category, how do you filter and search for them? etc...
I think the ones that aren't big brands have off-the-shelf parts. As in Cyberpower, iBuyPower, SkyTech, even Micro Center's Powerspec.
Some of the brands you mentioned use MSI components. And MSI also sells prebuilts. I also think ASUS might be a good option as they sell components as well as prebuilts.
But while there are proprietary components here. HP has a slew of videos on YouTube about how to upgrade or change components on the 16L. That's nice. It seems like a pretty decent every level system.

Yes, but I mean actually big box brands like HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc who don't also sell PC components. MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, etc are well known for their PC components. This is a decent deal but still has the typical prebuilt flaws, unlike the MSI Aegis R2 with RTX 5050 that went on sale about a week back. I believe the 35L Omens use non-proprietary parts.
OP has posted so many Omen deals I almost believe they are sponsored. Also of note from another deal, some of the Omen's Motherboards are locked down so they can only accept 8000-series CPUs, seems like another non-starter.

I just bought a Cyberpower Pre-Bult and it has off the shelf components, like a budget Asus Motherboard. Even though it's low end, it's significantlhy better than the HP motherboard on my HP M01, as it has ram speed control, (XMP) and the ability to use legacy OS's (CSM). From what I've seen the Ibuypower Prebuilts also use similar components to the Cyberpowers.

is it confirmed steam machine will use a weaker gpu?
Yes, it's a little more expensive (and doesn't have the cool gamer case) but the 9060 XT here has twice the VRAM, is about 40% faster, and supports FSR4. And since it's still an AMD card it supports SteamOS (eg Bazzite) very well.
