Got mine, the imaging processor does that horizontal slice wobble thing that cheap cameras do when panning, but not as rough as I expected. This is basically a compact SD camcorder's specs minus microphone and with an IR floodlight added, and it feels more bulky in a binoculars form factor/shape. I would prefer the camcorder form factor to save bulk and for more viewing angles (even cheap SD camcorders have swivel screens), but this is/was $35, and the cheapest IR night vision camcorder I found was $70 (just comparing on other shipped by Amazon). Even without the digital zoom, this seems to have a 2x optical magnification, which I just roughly guesstimated by comparing an object in the screen image vs. what I could see with bare eyes, side by side. Text was clearer, so I figured it was optical magnification. The viewing angle seems to be about 20 degrees, so there's tunnel vision (imagine looking through a dime-sized hole); an old '00s camcorder has much wider field of view (but probably much shorter range from the built-in IR).
Gen 0 night vision, but I think $35 is a good price, $50 being fair, but at $70 or more I'd either go w/ a vlogger camcorder w/ IR for city use, spotting night vision security cameras or active IR lamps, or general snooping. This unit is probably suitable for less built-up environments with more open space, but with the 20 degree FOV you'll have to scan more or know where to aim.
The IR light shows as a dim red glow in the dark (you can see similar if you look at an IR TV remote control and press a button, it'll flash a dim red briefly, but this unit's IR lamp will be dim red as long as it is on). Also, being a flashlight, you will get reflection glare on the screen view if you're fairly straight on, including bright eyes from animals, and glass. You'll also get poor performance from the built-in IR lamp trying to see through glass, but you could set up IR lamps on the other side of the glass and leave the built-in IR lamp off if you like.
There's a focus ring, (edit: it needs one, objects at different distances fall out of focus). It does have a visible light fill light in addition to the IR, but with both off, just indoor lighting, there's definitely a red/yellow bias in the screen video (like a smartphone camera w/ cheap image processing).

Not the kind of night vision you think it is. It's basically a cheap camcorder viewing whatever its infra LED bulb lit up. You will still have fun, but you won't see far.

Any suggestions for sub$100 night vision?

Amazon sellers/items these days are all above 4.5 stars and makes it impossible to filter shitty ones out and on top of that all sellers are with names like jumbled letters

You pay Amazon enough money they'll give you any random listing with 5 star reviews to put your product on top of.
