There is a cardboard version up for preorder for $25. That is still kind of a silly price as well but probably easier to store away when you get bored with the novelty of the Virtual Boy 5 minutes in. I can't give Nintendo money any more. They are just too anti consumer. $99 for a piece of plastic to play poor quality 3D games that still requires you to pay another yearly fee to access them is about as Nintendo as you can get.
when was Nintendo not anti-consumer?

Or any other company for that matter laugh out loud

Not really defending Nintendo with the way they currently treating the consumer, but there is the $25 cardboard version if you really just want to play the games. Most people will think the point is the games, which wasn't even a great experience and then they'll complain on the $99 version. The replica is mostly for nostalgia and the $25 cardboard box is good enough just to play the games if people just want. and also, other regions are selling the nostalgia version for $75 after currency conversion. I think UK sells it cheaper than even the $69.99 games. Even those $50 or $40 amiibos are cheaper in other countries outside NA. Those tariffs have really hurt the prices on a lot of Chinese plastics/materials. I preordered the $99 version, but I'm going to be running it with a modded Switch 1.

Have my original from the 90's. It was neat for a while, but as others have said, eye strain and headaches are part of my memories of pulling up to the table to sit and shove my face in it. A few decent games, but nothing that's worth the money and effort this day in age.
I just remember the lenses being so freaking hot while playing. Face sweat everywhere when you peeled your eyes away from the unit with a pounding headache 5 minutes into some Mario Tennis.

Edit: Here's a gameplay video if anyone is unfamiliar / curious [youtu.be]. So just imagine watching that ~1 inch away from your eyeballs, at max brightness, with your face smashed up against a hot (non-ventilated) lens enclosure.

When do you expect the online shop to close down? It seems it should be available for quite some time. The individual games being available are a different story though, but I doubt they take up enough room on the servers to be an issue any time soon. I have honestly been in the market for a Virtual Boy in the recent past, but wasn't willing to pay the recent prices considering the added cost of the games.

Edit: I agree it is a bit of a novelty item though.
Nintendo pretty predicably sunsets all services once they move on to their next gen ecosystem. The question isn't if, but when. However since the Switch 2 recently launched, and knowing how long Nintendo likes to beat a dead console horse, you'll likely have 5-8 years at least.

That being said, hardware that requires constant subscription to use? GTFO with that nonsense....

P.S. I'm not the one who downvoted you, not like it really matters though.

You forgot the controller heating up from the 8 AA batteries discharging all at once.

BTW, whoever approved the WaterWorld game for release on the VB needs life in prison. That made ET on the Atari look like a masterpiece in comparison.

As neat as this is, there's a good chance this will give you severe headaches if you play for an extended period of time. I borrowed this from a friend back when it released ages ago and I got the worst migraines after every time I played. I never wanted to play it again after a few days. It's just simple games in weird 3Dish red outlines, although I remember the Mario Tennis game being pretty fun at the time(not sure if that's the name). This is more like a collectable item in my opinion. I definitely wouldn't buy this for kids to play with.

If you haven't played this you are probably better off passing on it. Completely red/black gameplay, minimal games and not comfortable for long sessions. Haven't played mine since elementary school.

They brought this back?

Did they take the various YouTube videos about this being one of the worst products ever personally?

I do agree you shouldn't need a subscription to use hardware you bought. I also say that knowing I have a doorbell camera I pay a subscription fee for as well though, but I also know that it isn't required to use the most basic features of it.

This is from the Nintendo shop's listing. It appears that basic nso is needed to purchase but expansion is required for games. I have family+expansion so I didn't even pay attention. This product can be purchased by those who have a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. To play games in the Virtual Boy - Nintendo Classics, you will need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
What a messed up way to do business in the gaming industry.

Like BMW and subscription for heated seats. What the crap Nintendo?

Somewhat related, this guy on Youtube fixed a faulty VB, it was a pretty cool fix, but sadly it was his last video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWFf1F6vLdw

Ended up getting one with the 20% off eShop credits from Sam's Club. Personally do agree that it's silly to require a subscription to buy/play it, I share a family + expansion plan and pay $10/year for my portion so it stings a bit less.
