The drawback is, once you have people on free lines, you can never switch the carrier or take advantage of the promotions you get by switching the carrier. You are stuck.

how? You can still switch the carrier with fewer lines you switch. I did this before.

TL;DR: Exercise extreme caution that your plan isn't changed.

I had a a great plan with T-Mobile from an old employee plan from decades ago when I worked for Sprint. Last time I tried this promo it nearly ended in disaster with the rep changing my plan after I expressly voiced not to and i wouldn't take the line if it required a plan change. Would have gone from $40 a month to $130 a month to add a single line, but it would be a 'free line'.
It was pulling teeth to get it all undone and was a major catalyst for me to find a new carrier.

For people who have 8 lines on the ONE plan and need to go to the ONE 9-12 plan, what is the correct SOC to move to? From my search, there is TIULFM9 vs FRLTULFM9. The see people on Reddit mentioning they're on either one or the other, but I cannot find what the actual difference is between the two. Is one better than the other? For example I saw somebody mention an old "Friends and Family 2016 promo" working for one SOC and not the other.
When I made that same decision (many, many) years ago, the "Friend and Family 2016 promo" reported difference was all that I found in my research. I went with FRLTULFM9 because this SOC was the most similar to the SOC from which I was migrating and I was worried about messing up my existing discounts. Once I moved and added free line #5, I was able to get an additional 5 free lines for a total of 10 today. For whatever reason(s), I haven't been eligible for the past couple years of free lines. So maybe try asking those 9-12 line SOC people about when they last added a free line? Mine was December 2022. I haven't yet checked for this one, but highly unlikely. I'll post again if I am eligible.

You get a auto pay discount for every line you have on the account even if its free. So you end up making money on the free lines.
I believe Autopay discount maxes out at 8 lines ($40)

Consolidation remove. Port out paid line AAA-AAA-AAAA to a temp carrier, paid line is auto cancelled --> port in AAA-AAA-AAAA over free line BBB-BBB-BBBB. Now free line is AAA-AAA-AAAA and you are down 1 paid line. Whole process could be done in an hour, but I recommend over a day or two just to make sure your temp carrier has full control over AAA-AAA-AAAA before porting back to T-mobile.

Some major caveats:
1) You must maintain the same number of lines or more for 1 year since you added any free line promotions. Dropping below the count may result in losing the free line promotion.
2) Your SOC must have a minimum of 2 base paid lines. A few older free line promotions required an extra set of base paid lines, so the min for them is 4 base paid lines. Dropping below this number may result in losing a free line promotion and the free line becoming a base paid line.
Thanks so much, this is an excellent answer. It should be pinned at the top of the thread.

Any recommendations of cheap, yet reliable, carrier for temp port out destination?

Has anyone seen the offer in the T-Life app?

If so, where did you find it (like in benefits section or first screen)?

And what wireless plan are you on?

Do the free lines can apply to a business plan as well? I signed up for the 6 lines ProMobile plan during thanksgiving week, and finally ported my lines last Friday... I know it's a bit early for everything probably, but if anyone has any advice on a previous experience, will be great! TIA!
