Unless you need to connect to a Nintendo Switch, this seems to be better and cheaper https://a.co/d/eRY1aaB

Id at least go ugreen if you're going ewaste. Problem is a lot of these no name brands offer only a fraction of the speed they advertise. TP-link on the other hand is probably reliable in that regard

Why do you think so? They all probably use the same Realtek chipset, maybe even be the same socs with different case and branding

nop that's not how it works... you either connect at 100 or 1000mbs speed which ever is faster... there is no magic faster or slower.

Yeah. Until you take it apart and realize it's USB 2.0 being sold as 3.0 (literally had that happen with a random cheapo brand). they can also use outdated chipset drivers.

See my comment above. There have been reports of pretty dated binned chips and I've def gotten 2.0 sold as 3.0 before. That said it's Amazon so just return

I'm confused. The point is 2.0 won't do 1000 Mbps, it bottlenecks at 480. If yours only does 100 that's a limitation of as you said, what you plug in. Doesn't mean someone selling a 3.0 promising 1000 Mbps speed isn't lying, when it turns out it's really 2.0.

100 and 1000 Mb/s are the negotiated speed. That doesn't mean the device is capable of of those speeds. There are various reasons a NIC can't perform as fast as it's negotiated speed.

As an example, the Raspberry Pi 3 came with an onboard gigabit Ethernet adapter. However, this adapter was bottlenecked by a USB 2.0 bus. This meant that the onboard NIC got around 320 Mb/s [jeffgeerling.com] of actual throughput. This shows that the negotiated rate had to be above 100 Mb/s, but throughput didn't come close to reaching 1 Gb/s speeds.

Another common one that should be easy for everyone to accept is heat. Junky products are more likely to consume more power and have issues dissipating heat. Thermal throttling is a major factor for many CPUs, GPUs, RAM, storage, and network adapters. In this case, a poorly designed or manufactured NIC might have thermal issues with prolonged use.

(I'm not arguing that the BENFEI adapter suggested above, or any other specific adaper will have performance issues. I'm just saying that many adapters do perform below their negotiated speed.)

EDIT: I thought I had some real examples on hand somewhere. I dug through my drawers and found these: StarTech USB21000S2 [amazon.com] and Cable Matters Media Streaming Adapter [amazon.com]. Both clearly advertise being USB 2.0 Gigabit adapters.

if it doesn't negotiate it automatically fall back to lower. so if you have usb 2.0 gigabit adapter adapter it 'll just negotiate at 100mps

i've never seen a usb 2.0 adapter negotiate at 1000mps speed... have you?

Why do you keep asking that? Yes I have. I gave you 2 examples of devices sitting on my desk. The Cable Matters link I shared contains reviews with screenshots showing speeds over 300 Mb/s. If the device negotiated down to 100 Mb/s, then 100 Mb/s would be a hard upper limit.

I just went a step further and plugged the StarTech adapter into a USB 3.0 port on my PC. Using UsbTreeView, I can see that the Ethernet adapter is only capable of high-speed (USB 2.0). At the same time, Windows shows the link speed is 1000/1000. The light on my switch also indicates 1 Gb/s.

Please stop asking if anyone has seen this.
