Regardless of what Phillps / Gaggia / Saeco you buy they all share the same "removable brew group" (AKA... they system that makes your espresso). So their most expensive and this machine will make the identical cup of espresso... the differences are how many different degrees can you change your drink, more micro settings, better finishings and that is about it.
What makes Saeco so good is that their system is fully removable and cleanable... when there is a problem you can usually fix it your self and it is considered best for DIY maintenance.
My brother has a Saeco system... he tells me that sometime he gets 3 warnings at the same time.... it could be water tank is empty, coffee grounds are empty, coffee grounds need to be cleaned... and one time there was a fourth... water resovoir under your cup was full... each one of these warnings will prevent the machine from working.
I think this could be one of the best "automatic" espresso machines deals around.
By the way, before I called and negotiated the $50 off, I felt like doing what you described but my personal values prevent me from doing that.
And this machine (back to this deal) is considered the best for DIY fixes. Why could he not fix it and ask Amazon for a larger discount? That is what I would always try to do.
I highly recommend your suggestion... There are some videos out there that show you how to tweak a few options to help you get a better coffee from the machine if you feel like you need it.
Upgrading will not change the actual system that makes your coffee... it is more about everything else.
If you're seeking a dependable coffee maker, consider investing an additional $100 and purchasing a Breville or Ninja Luxe during their sale. These machines are designed to last at least 5-6 years, making them a worthwhile investment when you're spending over $400.

I got one of these 3200 LatteGo machines last year when they had the $230 certified refurb deals.
It makes ok espresso. Definitely gotta put good decent beans in. Not garbage lavazza from amazon that are usually several months old. Go to Costco or Sams Club and find something with a recent date. Or local coffee shop beans. But the grouphead is plastic so it's only going to be so good.
It's a low maintenance machine. You can make 15 or so shots before you have clean the bottom drip pan or refill the hopper.
You definitely want to take the unit out the side every 2 months and clean the automatic assembly.
Otherwise if you just want basic espresso and don't want fuss it's fine. I got it because I have 3 kids and haven't had time to mess with my Breville 860XL as much as I'd like. It went into storage.
Having a milk frother is a good hack for making fluffy hot chocolate, which my daughter loves. You can make frothed milk with this machine if you hit the latte button and then press and hold the bean button for "add my own beans" and don't add any. Then make a latte and it'll steam the milk and you can take the cup away before it tries brewing.
