Both Apple TV and Nvidia Shield do the same. The difference is, Apple and Nvidia data (as a matter of a business practice) are not sending your intimate data straight to an adversarial communist government Where-as a TCL, Hisense, or other Chinese government branded companies (which are 100% owned and controlled by the Chinese government) "discretely" send any and all data gleaned through their devices straight to the government as a matter of "business practice". Basically, at this point - it is a matter of choosing your poison and mitigating (as much as you can) the exfiltration of your data with any brand you chose to purchase or consume.
Hate to break it to you, but all governments are "adversarial."

Before you order one of these do a little research on how Roku harvests your personal data, including multiple screenshots sent to the mother ship per minute. If you are all concerned about your privacy consider getting a (more expensive) NVidea Shield. It includes 4K up-scaling and the Pro version has a Plex server built in.
Not sure if this still applies but here are instructions how to turn off Roku's Automatic Content Recognition (ARC) technology.

Yes, they all harvest data, which is why the HiSense TV that's behind my Nvidea Shield is not on a network. Only the Shield has a network connection. That way I don't have to worry about the HiSense phoning home with my personal data, nor do I have to worry about anyone accessing the cameras or microphones on the TV. That said, this post is about the Roku devices which is why I didn't make any mention of the other devices, but you are absolutely right. They are all terrible when it comes to exploiting personal data. Amazon's Firesticks are even worse.
How are they harvesting video/pictures? Do the TVs have cameras?

I wouldnt get anything from Roku. They had an issue with data leaks with the TV and before going public they updated the arbitration language in the ToU and forced people to accept in order to keep using the TVs.
Horrible company.
Okay thx... buying 2 now

Truly a slick deal when you factor in the costs of both of these products.

privacy is pretty much over your data is harvested by your TV if you use a smart tv, your ISP, your streaming devices, your cell phone, if you have a nest thermostat or ring camera anywhere! Your forked unless you have only wired internet into your house and turn your pc off when not using it and put your cell phone into a faraday bag. Then you still have to make sure you don't have any bluetooth devices in your house with long range bluetooth as those devices will just connect to your neighbor's equipment and harvest your data that way! Basically privacy is long over but its ok because your probably streaming all your personal life's ongoings on your Facebook page anyways!

Holy crap. Any sources on this shady behavior?
Any rudamentary Google search on embedded spyware in [insert your manufacturer here] and you'll get to the hole.
This has also been in the news over the past year or so with various states bringing lawsuits with the latest being Texas.

wonder what they do when the TV has no camera or microphone? My LG you have to buy the separate remote for voice features to work, out of the box my 86" LG the biggest most expensive TV they sold that year they nickel and dime you over a upgraded remote for all features to work as advertised and that say so much about the brand. Its a fantastic TV for picture quality but LG really cuts corners in weird places on a FLAGSHIP model its stupid.
I'm not sure if you're referring to a non-connected TV or not but for a connected TV;
Camera and mic aren't needed to glean ACR data. ACR is the mechanism that harvests your data, button pushes, what you're watching, how long, how often you change channels, shows, etc. This data is shared (sold) to the content providers (among others) to target you for advertising, products, etc.
Under the hood it's much more complex than that but that's the jist.

Coupled with a microphone and camera - it's beyond intrusive

Some of us are not so willing to acquiesce and we keep the fight going on every front we can. If you want to give up. roll over, play dead, that's certainly your option. A person can actually have an impact of stemming that theft of their PII. Sometimes by depriving them of it. Sometimes feeding them misinformation. Remember, the only thing better then given them no data is given them bad data.

You don't need a camera to capture a screenshot. Rokus do not have cameras but many smart TVs do. That's a separate discussion and an altogether separate, exploitable, free pass into your living room and bed room. That's why it is a good idea to never connect a TV directly to a network. Always front-end it with another device, like an NVidea Shield (or Apple TV), and even a Roku or a Firestick will accomplish that. You just have to put up with the other data harvesting BS from Roku and Firestick,

If your not air gapping your home and keeping all bluetooth devices and smart devices out of your home you are wasting your time! Also don't accept any EULA or click on any website. If you want something to change contact your legislators and pressure them to pass laws! Do you shop anywhere with an account AKA Amazon, Walmart, Target plus, yep that is data mining you as well. Got a Costco membership......pointless in 2025 to even try IMO! NEST thermostat? Ring doorbell? Do you own a smartphone, better deGoogle it or or if you own an Apple product your just a flat out hypocrite?

What?

They take screenshots and send it off?

That's an absolute no go.
Your Cell phone, your PC, your smart TV, your internet browser, your streaming device, your (insert anything with bluetooth or wifi) is farming you for data! Why wouldn't they? Ever wonder how you can get a 90 inch TV for $99 because selling your data is more profitable than charging you the actual cost of the TV! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2...cIQ&t=536s
