As I've gotten older, the only time I see WD-40 mentioned, is in a situation where somebody that has suffered is warning others to never use WD-40 for the application I'm considering. It feels like a prank product at this point.

This is NOT a lubricant. It is a penetrant, designed to spray on stuck rusty fasteners to make their removal easier.

That may be somewhat true for their namesake multi-use product that is a jack-of-all and master-of-none. But the WD-40 company makes dozens of different sprays that do work well for the tasks that they were designed for.

Is this good for garage door, joint, roller and chain vs the specific garage door lubricant?
I prefer something that says dry silicone. One is called 3in 1, CRC... ? I have a few cans. It lubes, prevents rust, and does not attract grit and dirt like the stuff that stays wet. Its also good on locks and hinges, bike chains, garagedoor chains rollers, battery posts to prevent acid etc. Not so much to loosen rusted stuff but it works a little.

problem is people fail to follow up with the appropriate grease/lubricant afterwards. It's like cleaning any metal part and then just leaving it in the elements unprotected.

Definitely do not use this on the garage door. You will see rust on your springs in no time. Use a silicone spray that especially formulated for garage doors. It does exist. I never use WD-40 anymore. The WD stands for water displacement.
This is the way.
