You can get solid pre-owned/vintage Seikos for under $500 though.
I know, I have several grails….all vintage though. Citizen bullheads, King Seikos - definitely worth it. New stuff though, try to stay well under $300.

This watch notwithstanding (I don't know anything about it), this company is mostly marketing and slapping overpriced price tags on watches assembled from bargain bin parts. You'd do much better with any Seiko or Citizen at the same price points.
100% this ^ it looks like another henrys watches deal which I almost fell for.

- All watches are marketed…..that's how they are sold

- Many, in fact most Seikos and Citizens are overpriced and built to a price

- I don't know of any limited edition Seiko or Citizens that are ISO-rated dive watches resistant to 20 bar.

- The Prospex line would be 20 bar rated, but not limited, numbered editions and would be north of $350……this watch is $150.

- This watch is running a Seiko automatic movement and comes with a 2 year warranty like many microbrands.

- Generally Seikos and Citizens are not mentioned when folks are looking for quality watches that punch above their weight.

Finally, 'you'd be better off' with any Zelos, Armida, Helson, Revelot, Helm, Baltic or San Martin before you buy a Seiko or Citizen if you're looking for watches that are limited, hold their value and punch far above their weight.

Yes, I think he is. As a collector, when we hear people mention Seiko and Citizens as watches to buy, we gringe. There are collectible, high quality Seikos, no Citizens though and anyone looking at a $150 watch isn't thinking investor-grade. LOL

And Seikos under $500 are notorious for bad builds. Poorly aligned hands, bezels, chapter rings…..just hate when newbies give bad advice….
Oof, there's so much misinformation I can't fathom how it's coming from a "collector".

As a collector myself, my opinion is you have no idea what you're talking about. Only the most pretentious and close minded "collectors" would cringe at someone recommending Seiko/Citizen.
Over 500, all my Seikos and Citizens that I've collected are 40+ years old (bullheads, King Seikos, etc). Only a pretentious newb would make a blanket recommendation to go buy Seikos and Citizens.

I can't fathom how a real watch enthusiast wouldn't know about the ongoing quality issues with Seikos.

Ah yes, a dozen or so people complaining on reddit 3 years ago about a brand that sells something like 5 million watches a year is indicative of the brand's quality. Got it.

And somehow you think MVMT, of all brands out there, would be better quality??

If you'd bothered to read through your own link, most of the dorks on reddit don't even have a problem/issues with Seiko's QC at the right price level. It's a mass-produced product sometimes made in countries where "good enough" is.

And I've had Seikos with bezel alignment issues. But every seiko I've ever owned punched way above it's weight. And all have functioned flawlessly for decades. From Grands all the way down to a sub-$200 beater.

I've never heard of this "brand", but from my brief reading, they're trash. Polishing turds for the uninformed/ignorant who fall for marketing without doing research. Essentially a "as seen on TV" level product.

All that to say buy a Seiko, Bulova, or Citizen for the same money. Don't buy this junk.

Watch collectors love being called dorks.

AI Overview

Yes, Seiko is notorious for chapter ring misalignment and other QC issues, even on higher-priced models, frustrating many buyers who find it unacceptable for a brand of its size, leading to a "meme" status, but these watches are often repairable or replaceable under warranty, with fixes involving crystal removal and re-gluing the ring.

Common Issues
  • Misaligned Chapter Rings: The inner ring with minute/second markers doesn't line up with the dial's indices or bezel pip.
  • Misaligned Indices/Bezel: Hour markers or the bezel insert itself can also be off.
  • Loose Chapter Rings: Sometimes the ring wiggles due to its mounting notch.

Why It Happens
  • Mass Production: Seiko produces a massive volume of watches, and tolerances in the tiny notches for the chapter ring can lead to slight shifts.
  • Acceptable Tolerances: Some argue Seiko considers slight misalignment acceptable for tool watches, but it's still a significant complaint.

Solutions & Buyer Advice
  • Buy in Person: If possible, inspect the watch before buying, especially from grey market dealers, to ensure alignment.
  • Return/Exchange: If bought online and obviously misaligned, return it for a new one.
  • Warranty Repair: Get it fixed under warranty; Seiko should correct it, often by removing the crystal and re-gluing the ring.
  • DIY Fix: A watchmaker or experienced hobbyist can realign it by removing the crystal and securing the ring with adhesive, though it requires care.
  • Is it Still a Good Watch?

Many Seikos are durable, reliable, and have great movements (like the NH35).
The misalignment issue is a known flaw, but doesn't necessarily mean the entire watch is bad, just that you might need to check or fix that specific part.

The funniest part is Chinese homage brands like Pagani Design actually provide far better quality than Seiko does at lower price points (and they even use Seiko movements). But Seiko is at a low enough pricepoint (like Citizen, Bulova, and Tissot) where you are still able to get some heritage/history with the watch you buy so that also has to factor into the price.

I have collector watches (mostly bronze dive watches - all automatics) and I regularly wear my Zelos, Seikos, and a Citizen dive watch that looks quite ridiculous on me. I stay away from most fashion watches but, I do often purchase from some micro brands.

Using a mineral crystal on a $157 watch from an obscure brand is difficult to justify. You can easily find watches with the same NH movement and a sapphire crystal for well under $157

I bought two MVMT watches years ago and never use them. One died completely just sitting in a drawer and won't even turn on with a battery. I've also had poor customer service from MVMT they were very condescending and closed my case without discussing anything. Shame.

I bought this watch several months ago at a similar price on sale. As a serial watch flipper who has gone through literally 100s of watches especially divers in tiers from Seiko/Citizen/Orient to Tissot/Oris/ to Tudor/Omega to many assorted microbrands, I 100% think this is a very solid deal at ~$150 for several reasons:
  1. Size - at 40mm with a L2L of around 47mm (but fairly thick at 13.5) I find it to be nicely chunky without being overwhelming for my 6.7in wrist. I think it hits a sweet spot that shouldn't be too big or small for most wrist sizes.
  2. Design - It's distinctive. It reminds me of a cross between the Longines Legend (which I owned and sold for being just too big L2L but loved otherwise) and the Caravelle Sea Hunter (which I picked up recently and is an awesome slightly smaller diver like this at $250-$300) - Quite simply, it has a nice presence in person and even reminds me of the Kobold Soarway Diver which was a cool but oversized and overpriced diver in its day. I've actually gotten a few nice compliments on this watch and its rare I ever get any on my divers.
  3. Packaging - It comes in a cool case that's pretty distinctive with 2 NATO straps with numbering on the box that does make it stand out.
  4. Movement - Standard low-cost Seiko movement that's in tons of similar microbrands and smaller brands. But the see-through case back has a bit of nice decoration and finishing on the perimeter as well.
  5. Rotating bezel is a bit loose but generally pleasing in action and sound (I'm very picky on this and a crappy rotating bezel will sour me on any diver watch). The crown is oversized, signed, and has pretty solid action overall, actually superior to many of the lower end Swiss divers I've owned like Glycine, Tissot, etc.
Now for some negatives:
  1. The spring bars are screwed in (very tight) and huge with large, drilled lug holes. They look cool and are designed to allow the 2 NATO straps to be exchanged easily but be aware if you plan on installing other straps your options will be a bit limited and large drilled lug holes will be apparent. I bought a 22mm brown leather strap with quick-release spring bars and I think it looks great generally, even with the large, drilled lugs.
  2. The mineral crystal is a huge bummer, as there are other options at that price (including even the other MVMT automatic divers!). But other divers in this price range and higher (like the aforementioned Caravelle SH and lots of Seiko/Citizens in this range) also include mineral crystal so it may or may not be a dealbreaker
  3. If you are brand conscious, this (Movado-owned) company has had a somewhat shady reputation over the years for publicity over quality, but IMHO, most people day-to-day know nothing about most watch brands in general, so this is likely to only bother the snobs (which does include me at times).
  4. With the NATO straps and the slightly thick profile the watch wears especially large for small wrists. Switching straps for me was a game-changer, but it's a slight pain with the stock spring bars.
Overall, I wanted to post this because I found this one of my favorite pick-ups of the past couple years, enough so that I've even considered picking up an extra one as a gift. Along with the Caravelle SH I mentioned, my two favorite low-cost divers of the recent years. While Seiko/Citizen/Microbrands (especially AliExpress brands like San Martin) might offer better bang for the buck in terms of specs, this watch is a fun package for sure!

MVMT is a terribly overpriced Chinese watch and right there in the bucket with Stuhrling Original. The Citizen Promaster is a well-known legitimate diving watch which is also an automatic and can be had for $250. The Promaster will last forever-- not sure I could say the same about a MVMT dive watch.

There are many other legitimate proven dive watches out there, so there is little reason to have a MVMT (pun intentional?). Hell, while not an automatic, a Casio Duro will outlast the wearer for <$60. And if you need some type of cred, this is the "Bil Gates Watch"...
