I would assume these are mostly targeted toward extreme outdoors or work situations. The average iPhone owner probably doesn't need one of these but for someone out on the field it's probably not a bad idea to have a secondary option like this available in case their phone gets damaged, lost, or the SOS signal doesn't work. The same can be said for this device but at least you have a 50/50 chance with two devices vs 1.
