Does Google TV still have an issue with too many ads? I've tried it a couple times over the years, but even though I'm Windows/Android everything, I keep going back to Apple TV since it's essentially ad-free.

I use projectivy launcher on all my android streamers (e.g. Shield, Google Streamer, Onn 4k Pro) so I won't see all the ads on the home screen.

Agree, I bought the Onn 4k Plus. It feels just as fast, I prefer the remote and it's $30.

Key Differences at a Glance
( google tv 4k vs Onn pro )

google tv 4k supports matter & threads , so it can be used as a home automation HUB.

Performance: Google Streamer is generally faster due to more RAM (4GB vs 3GB).
Connectivity: Onn wins with Wi-Fi 6 & 100Mbps Ethernet; Google wins with Gigabit Ethernet & USB-C.
Remote: Onn's remote is backlit and has a customizable button; Google's is simpler.
Voice: Onn has always-on, hands-free voice via built-in mic/speaker; Google relies on the remote button.
Price: Onn is roughly half the price.
Which to Choose?
Get the Onn 4K Pro if you're on a budget but want a feature-rich experience, including a smart speaker and backlit remote.
Get the Google TV Streamer if you want the fastest performance and best smart home hub integration and don't mind the higher price

Cheaper? Yep. Will it get updates long? Absolutely not and any update is delayed. I have an onn tablet and it's already 2 versions of android behind and won't get updates. Google will get updated often

You can put on apps only mode or use a launcher like someone else suggested. Theyre still selling your data regardless

Does android version matter for a tv streamer box?
Also onn 4k plus is half this price. Get another updated one when the updates end.

I splurged on a couple Google streamers on the last sale. I personally love the Google TV ecosystem. However if you're not a heavy user then the ONN 4K Pro offers better price for performance.

Yes, keep your devices up to date so they don't function as an entry point into your network

Security updates? As long as they do that for a few years.

Google Streamer vs Onn 4K Pro:

As a user GS had issues pretty early on for the 5-6 months I used it. Middling performance. Unforgivable because the O4K Pro never had such issues and was a beast in performance.

But the Onn had an unfixable vertical green lines after about 7 months.

My previous O4K Pro I gave to family and used it over this Christmas and it still works well.

So interesting this came up is I just got the onn pro version 4K for Christmas. All hooked up. I really like it and I think the microphone was the deal for me. I like being able to directly ask questions and have everything come up on my TV for all my answers to my questions but that's just me but everything works fast and fine enough for me on the onn so I'm hanging in there.
