It MAY approach $20, but last year I played the waiting game into February and ended up paying $30, the best price at that time

I'd jump on it. No point to waste time and effort on keeping track of sales to save a couple of bucks. It is splitting pennies here, but technically, if you are due a refund of any meaningful amount, you may as well file early(ier) and earn an extra buck or two in a savings account or a CD.

For filing in two states just buy qty-2 and then call the H&R agent to have them add one product key to the other so you have both working in the same program / file. I still have to do this when NY is one of the two states.

That was my question. FreeTaxUSA is very easy, cheap, and I've used it to file fairly complex tax returns for the past 15 years without problem. Multiple W2s, many 1099s, self-employed business income and expenses, K1s, etc.

Free for federal, with state e-filings being $15.99, sometimes less with coupon codes. If you're into professionally printed returns or want audit support, they have that. TurboTax is a scam when you compare the equivalent services.

Is there an advantage to the H&R Block software for self-filers? It seems reasonably priced at least.

I might go with FreeTaxUSA this year too. Never used them before but PCMag says it's their preferred free filing service for what that's worth. I've been using H&R Block for a few years but their web site says State filing is $37 now, vs $16 at FreeTaxUSA.
I've been using it for 15 years. Used TurboTax before that, but when they started pushing me into the expensive premier version because of my hobby business and investments, I tried FreeTaxUSA and never went back. I always recommend it, and find it very easy to use.

rental property income or if you are self-employed, otherwise, get the Deluxe. They had language last year that made me think I needed Premier for investments, but it turned out to be false (as pointed out by someone here) as Deluxe had everything.

Not entirely true. I do rental property and schedule C with Deluxe

Importing tax statements by connecting to brokerages ain't possible in free tax USA. If you have a lot of trades, you'll need it.

Will the fed/state price get any better before April?
Just checked my order history. Every year I got it sub $18 when buying in March. Last year I paid 22.49 in mid-January after there being no real discounts till then. I believe it never hit any lower than that leading up to April. All the sales so far have been in the high twenties with junk software tacked in as perceived value. If I buy now it would be 2.50 higher than last year, but I'm not sure if we'll even see that price.

Does Newegg allow to download both PC and Mac versions or just one of them?
I bought the deal and it lets me download either version.

You forgot to factory in a printer and ink cost. 15 a year is worth it not owning a printer
Plus, I don't have to deal with "The great USPS" losing my mails. They lost my mails both ways (Coming and going) so many times I don't depend on them anymore.

FreetaxUSA is $0 or $15 with state, and won't force you to upgrade to premium for extra forms for more complex taxes. (crypto requires filing 1099-DA this year. Or if you had rental property the deluxe probably doesn't have the correct forms).
If you had a business then I could see using H&R block premium business.
Freetax also won't do many common forms, it's only useful for really simple returns.

Oh, and you are giving up your personal information to use it, read the agreement.

Not worth the spamming and id risk for a product that won't do most returns.

I have a lot of trades, but the broker reports the transactions to the IRS, so the total short term, long term, and wash sales can all be reported as summarized entries for each brokerage account. There is no requirement to provide line by line entries for trades if the broker already reports the costs, proceeds and wash sale values. It only takes 10 minutes to enter all these for an individual taxable brokerage account, so if you have a bunch of taxable brokerage accounts, you'd probably want to pay to import these.

When this is required however, is if the brokerage does not report this information to the IRS. In that case, you MUST report the individual entries on a form 8949.

Interesting, I did not know that. Thanks for that detail. The summarized values are per brokerage I assume and not per security, correct?

In for Deluxe + State. Probably not the lowest it'll go, but I rather just have it early.
