It MAY approach $20, but last year I played the waiting game into February and ended up paying $30, the best price at that time

I'd jump on it. No point to waste time and effort on keeping track of sales to save a couple of bucks. It is splitting pennies here, but technically, if you are due a refund of any meaningful amount, you may as well file early(ier) and earn an extra buck or two in a savings account or a CD.

So mad bought the previous stupid deal to include VPN that I don't need. So lost out on $3.
Do you still have it? I will pay you $6 for it

Wow, we made through a whole page of comments before a TC'er brought up FreetaxUSA. 😄

If you have an LLC with some revenue, if the business better? Last year I tried the Business one but the interface was so horrible that I couldn't do anything with it.
And the rest of the filing was simply the Deluxe.

It also won't do many common forms, it's only useful for really simple returns.

Oh, and you are giving up your personal information to use it, read the agreement.

Not worth the spamming and id risk for a product that won't do most returns.
Is the "It" you're referring to re: the spam and id risk the HR Block product or the FreeTax product? I'm concerned about my info going out to the "cloud" with FreeTax. Thanks

Interesting, I did not know that. Thanks for that detail. The summarized values are per brokerage I assume and not per security, correct?
Exactly. I break out the short and long term proceeds as separately reported filings. The values that need reported are costs, proceeds, wash sales. Dividends and distributions have different rules, but should be provided by your broker in the usual 1099 forms.

Yep I just print and mail my state.
Why bother. FreeTaxUSA is $15 all-in with e-file.

I have a complicated tax scenario so always assumed FreeTaxUSA wouldn't have enough horsepower to handle rentals, securities, etc. Went for it last year after HR block software never seemed to get low enough for me. So glad I did. I even found FTUSA to be more user friendly in many respects. Federal was free and think I paid $10 for state efile. Saved like $50 over H&R Block's premium software and efile. Never going back.

I recommend to not stick with one tool and try other tools. Compare which can maximize your return then pay the fee. Foe example last year I used H&R but this year I used TurboTax which extracted more refund.

I used to use H&R block every year. For 2021 or 2022 (I don't recall which one), they did not include a Covid tax form regarding 401k withdrawals. I contacted them and they said that they decided not to include that form. I could not file my taxes with H&R block and they would not refund the purchase because it was over 60 days. I won't ever purchase H&R block again. If you buy it, make sure it has everything you need within those first 60 days.

The federal government stopped subsidizing free tax programs and so they will all cost $ this tax season. I always used to e-file for free for both Fed & State.

I did that a few years ago. After waiting for my tax return to get less than 150 miles away to my state's Department of Revenue, over 2 weeks, because of the incompetent USPS, I pay the extra to E-file. I know it gets there.
$15 over years ends up to a lot of loss.

I have mailed mine in for forty plus years and never had a problem. As long as it is postmarked by the 15th you are good.

Why or for what reason would I care if it takes weeks and what benefit does spending extra money fo that get me?

I think you do not think wisely about money If I would have done what you advise I would be out $600. That $600 would lbe $10,000 or more in an index fund. Why would I make corporation wealthier just as I do not like slow mail delivery?
