What is this for? Make your headphone sound louder?
You likely need a Headphone Amp & Preamp if:
  • [ ] Your headphones are rated above 100 Ohms.
  • [ ] Your headphones are Planar Magnetic.
  • [ ] You are at 90-100% volume on your computer/phone and it's still not loud enough.
  • [ ] You want a physical volume knob for your powered desktop speakers.
  • [ ] You hear static/interference from your computer's headphone jack.
You probably DO NOT need one if:
  • [ ] You use wireless Bluetooth headphones (the amp is built inside them).
  • [ ] You use standard earbuds or consumer headphones (like basic Bose or Sony) that get plenty loud at 50% volume.

I've been using a Schiit stack for many years now. It's great when it works but the USB connectivity of the Modi DAC has always gone bad after a few years in one way or another and just stops getting recognized by the computer. I think that's why they made the latest Magni have a slot where you can just slot in the DAC component. My current Modi has to be warmed up for the USB to get recognized for like 15-20 minutes and they even recognize it on their website that it's an issue (or at least they did last time I looked) but have no return program for it. You just get to buy a new one. I think my next purchase in this space will be another brand.

Oh Schiit!!! Lol... Last time I seen these go on sale back in 2024, I could've sworn they were $10 cheaper. I guess that's "inflation" for ya...
--Edit--
It was the Magni+ which I purchased back in Feb 2024 for $59 from schiit.com.

Keep in mind the "power" spec is semi useless without knowing the impedance it's rated at. 1000 mW rated into 16 Ohms may produce only 7 mW into 600 Ohm cams. It is far more useful to know the outputs rail voltage and its maximum current.
Great point! Nevertheless, my very loud headphone amp is rated 1500mW at 32Ω and this one is rated 2500mW at 32Ω according to the manufacturers.

Either way, it's a great time in history to be buying an overpowered headphone amp I guess.

Nah, incremental upgrade you'd barely notice.

Didn't this company have serious popping issues when you turn on and off their amps? I vaguely remember them trying to convince people it's not an issue lmao.

I know this deal is over, but does anyone know of a good comparison of the different generations of Schiit Magni? I have looked online but can't find anything. I feel like it's someone would do haha.
