Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

And it's totally optional.
At the same time, import to TT requires sharing your brokerage login/password with them. I'm not sure which is worse.
Whataboutisim doesnt make it better. And your choice is to upload documents or manually enter all your info into FreeTaxUsa...sounds great.

Also, you dont understand how the sign in to 3rd party works if you think thats whats going on with the Intuit connection to brokerages etc.

This happened to me last year. I noticed that when I changed an entry in one of the education sections the calculation changed. When I changed it back again the calculation stayed the same. So then I had to go back and figure everything out about what was happening and if the rest of the calculations were correct.
Yup. Its unique in that it is the only place in TT where you need to go thru the entire interview process to be able to change the calculation. Nowhere does TT say it and most of the forums dont understand what the issue it. You need to go thru the entire Q&A for education to change the calc. You cannot just change the entry, it will not change the calc. If you try to override, it prevents efiling.

Ahh I see that it is tokenized now. You used to have to put your login/pass directly into TT. Manual entry is still no harder than any other tax form since you can consolidate and report aggregate long and short term capital gains in most cases (i.e. you don't have to list every trade). This feature is nice, but overrated IMO. I know it's very important to some people and I respect that. Same with varying degrees of comfort with privacy, AI, security, the cloud, etc.

It's too bad the IRS doesn't build an API that can automatically send the data they already have on you into the tax software rather than having us put it back in manually or through an import. I can see how that would scare a lot of people, but you can already do this after the fact by downloading your IRS transcript.

Sorry, any "solution" that imports 1099 PDFs that it then attempts to parse the data from isn't something that I want to use for my taxes.

I'd prefer for the software I use to direct download the data from the financial institution into my taxes without having me to double-check that the PDF import process didn't mess something up along the way.

People that say freetaxusa is just as good must have simple tax returns - I've got multiple 1099B's from three different financial institutions (Schwab, Fidelity and IBKR) and TT direct import makes it easy to get all the data imported correctly into my return.

Such a weird bug in their software. I've noticed that both Intuit and H&R Block have put minimal effort into their desktop software lately, focusing on the online version more (apparently). Any time they have to add a new section, it's kind of half baked. And in the case of TT, looks like it's designed for the web version primarily. They update for tax code of course, but the UI doesn't get update or bug fixes in many cases. And there are some items that are not handled well by any tax software, desktop or online (e.g. mortgage interest deduction, foreign tax credit, etc.).

Still forces you to login. Real debate is if I download, file from my PC, do they still have access to all your data like when using Online version.
No, if u file in TT desktop Intuit can not access data unless u generate a unique code from ur TT program and provide it to Intuit.

Yes, earlier today I used the Fidelity 25% off link with my AMEX and it triggered the AMEX $20 offer. Don't use AMEX's affiliate link.
I read in another thread that the Fidelity deal also works with Chase cards.
I bought the Amazon deal. But for next year, I am curious - I see the AMEX offers for $20 off $40 and I am curious if this works with the download version of TurboTax.
My concern is that the AMEX offers says "TurboTax - Online, Expert Assist & Full Service". I have a feeling the desktop version doesn't qualify.
I am curious if anyone was successful getting the $20 back for the downloaded version of TurboTax.
Thanks.

I have used it in the past without a problem. This year, I used Amazon free shipping credits to get Turbotax, but then I had to buy an additional state and used the Amex offer and got the $20. My experience is that as long as the charge is directly with Turbotax/Intuit, you should get the credit.
P.S. Multiple people report having used Amex and the Fidelity discount to order the software. It's not just Wolve3, and I haven't heard anyone with any issues getting the credit.
