I contacted Anker support and they confirmed the clamping voltage on this model is 1200V. That's effectively useless. I'd avoid this if surge protection is your goal.

I bought a few of these generic chinese-cloned surge protectors and opened one to find that it has half as many varistors, the element that does the surge protection, as another reputable american brand with half the Joule rating. The entire circuit board looks very cheap. I no longer trust these. Ask yourself how these chinese brands can offer twice to three times the protection rating at 1/2 to 1/4 of the cost.

Anker surge protectors have been reliable for me. Not the cheapest option, but the flat plug and built-in USB-C make it convenient for tighter spaces.

I tend to buy Anker and other known-name products over the less expensive keyboard-smash-name products, but I don't think there is one testimony here that's not a shill or paid commenter.
This is hyperbolic at best. Sometimes things actually are just quality and well-liked. You sound paranoid.

Nice find. Hard to find a brand name strip with a 20W USB-C at this price. Perfect for a nightstand so I don't need a separate brick for my phone. In for one, thanks!

Not paranoid at all. Just stating my observation. Thank you for affirming it.

Great to know. Thanks!!

I have several Anker products (chargers, cables, etc.), but I now have a strong suspicion that they're simply living off an OLD and outdated reputation while still charging premium prices for many items.

I'm going to pass....
Their reputation is purely based off of paid reviews and giving free products in exchange for favorable reviews back then. Their products were pure garbage and with the money they made from "Marketing", they got big fast and expanded into other products. Some of their products are ok, but majority of their products are the same chinese garbage that most are re-packing and selling.

I have Anker products, all but one works very well. The one, maybe a lemon. This looks great. But if they're going to have usb's, I'd look for more usb-c nowadays.

Anker isn't generic, it was started by ex Google engineers

Well, you are absolutely right, any surge product is junk if the clamping voltage is 1200V.

I've had good luck with Anker products in the past but I'll never buy another Anker multiport charger/power strip. I recently purchased a different Anker wall plug/charger with 3 USB ports and the way it worked, rather than providing continuous power to each port, it would intermittently drop the connection to each port over and over. Anker replaced it and the replacement did the same thing, so apparently it's a design choice. In some instances, I'd plug my phone in overnight and it wouldn't even be fully charged in the morning.
Looking at the negative reviews on this item, it seems the USB ports on this may work the same way.

They are built with slave labor in sweatshops so the cost of production is much cheaper. To your point, the quality is probably not as good either. Both are factors in the lower price. For most applications, the cheaper Chinese made versions have worked fine for me but I wouldn't use one for an expensive computer/hame as equipment.

I like Anker products but this isn't really a deal. It bounces between $26 and $20 pretty much every other week. This surge protector is better than their other ones that are only rated for 900J or 300J protection

FWIW... It's been shown several times that products like this that look identical externally have different components and quality internal. There have been several reviewers that have done tear downs and compared Anker and others and shown the difference.I don't know if that applies to this product but it's not unusual for Anker to have a higher internal quality than other Chinese brands. There are also some products from Anker that are just low end throw quality products.
