I've got a several year old Osprey Porter 46 that I've loved. My only concern on it is the laptop slot is on the main flap. When the bag is full and you tighten down the retention straps, it's always worried me that it's putting stress on the laptop, especially at the top of the flap near the handles.

I like this design better where the laptop sleeve is more on the back/shoulder strap side.

Not sure I like it enough to upgrade my still really good bag.

Bought 4 of the 40l (farpoint and fairview) for me and the kids for a 10 day trip to the EU. These worked as overhead luggage, and fit just fine in the back of the 3 cylinder kia something that we rented. With packing cubes it's great. Next time I'll bring along a single packable bag that we can fill up and check in for the return trip.

I shortly had a porter. It's not adjustable and only works if have a compatible torso size. I backpacked for years and the farpoint/fairview is far and away a superior system, it's easy to adjust to get the weight off your shoulders.

Yes, the 55L bag is a 40L bag with the 15L attachable day pack. Thanks for pointing this out.
So many posts already covered this point. The hard choice is between a bag like this or a smaller 30-35L bag you use as your underseat bag with another carry-on like a suitcase. It really depends on how you travel. The 15 liter add on bag is ok, it could use better waterbottle pockets. They are just a little bit tight. Yes they are warrantied but I honest think they are just to small for the bottle I carry(32 ounce). I purchased the 55L. The first one that arrived had a standard 40 L and the daypack but it was obviously a return. Second one I ordered came with the bag missing extra pockets.

If you are mainly airports I would likely consider a rolling suitcase and the 40L or other 30L range osprey backpack.

If you travel more remote locations they 55l+ are hard to beat unless you had pick each part. Overall I enjoyed being able to unclip the 15l and have all my needed items available versus shifting through a bag to pull them out.

Depending on which version this is….2024 or 2025:

Personally I recommend going with the 40L and getting a separate daypack later.

The problem is that the 55L omits the side-opening zippered laptop sleeve thats present on the 40L and encourages you to use the 15L daypack to stash your laptop.

This puts a heavy weight further from your body and can cause the daypack to droop a lot. The 40L laptop sleeve also provides better protection for the laptop IMO since it's closer to your body and it augments your center of gravity in a good way.

Personally I have been using my 40L (BF purchase 2025 @$92) with a 18L Hikelite pack that I got on here a couple years back.
The 40L Farpoint is pretty versatile and if you're crafty it can hold a variety of smaller bags (if you don't have their daypack) using its compression straps.

I can't say enough good things about Osprey. Easily one of my fav brands and I hope they keep on doing the amazing things they do. These days I just want to convert all my bags to Osprey since they are innovative as heck and just so incredibly comfortable.
thanks for your post. very good information

Looks huge. Do airlines treat this as a carry-on instead of an underseat bag?
I asked the same question when this was on sale back in November. I got replies saying it's based on how you pack your bag. People said yes it would fit (could be a tight fit but doable). Others said it had to go in the overhead compartment.

I've really liked the 55L version for domestic air travel. Soft-sided like a duffel so it can be crammed into the overhead despite being technically too big. Daypack zips off as your personal item. Also I find backpack is way better than rollerbag, if you don't mind carrying the weight you can maneuver much better. The warranty is not as ironclad as it used to be but it's holding up very well

They will allow most backpacks as a personal item. I was able to get the pack to fit under the seat when required. Worse case they could force it into the hold. Just hide the straps and you are all set, it will travel well in the hold.

Hard choice is between this bag and a good 25-35l backpack. The slightly smaller bags are easier to get to fit as a personal item and offer tons of space as well. Totally love the Proxima Osprey bagl, it is a little easier to fit under the seat if needed and feel like it hold almost as much as the 40l.

This is pretty dependent on whether your low cost carrier of choice likes to check your bag dimensions or not. A (full) 30L isn't going to fit into any airline sizing checker, and a 25 won't fit into a United checker.

I've got a 18-26L expandable that is my short-trip bag, and the Farpoint as my main travel bag for longer trips, where I take the smaller bag as a daypack and underseat laptop/snack bag. I'd love to get the base bag from the 55L Farview as I never use the laptop sleeve in mine and the padding just takes up space. Plus the non-standard clips for turtle carry means it's hard to adapt my (non-Osprey) daypack, but the Osprey daypack is terrible for general use, with near zero external accessibility and minimal internal organization. IMHO, the only benefit over a stuff pack is the bottle mesh and (much) better straps.

Thank You!

I don't have tons of low cost carrier experience. My memory of the United Carry On sizer(20-21" x 14" x 8-9") the 40l fit if slightly under-packed and if you put away the straps. I don't think it would make the personal item sizer (9x10x17), but the Osprey Proxima (10.63H X 12.99W X 18.9D) backpack would fit well with clothing/underfilling and good use of the compression straps. Osprey Daylite 26+6 would be a great option, but I prefer the Proxima.

Really hard to make a rule which works for everyone in every situation. Thank you for the heads up.

I think I'll go with the Thule Aion just to be safe. It's roomy and can be carried comfortably as a daypack

Some useful feedback. How does this compare with the Daylite carryon 35 or 44. That seems to be lighter and just as good as this? I am looking at that for purchasing.
I understand the farpoint is solid but its a carryon so doesn't really need a heavier fabric

I believe that the 55 L bag is the 40L bag with the attachable day pack, so probably worth the extra $21.

I have an older version of the 55L (where the 40L bag isn't overhead compliant) and the the 40L. When I used the 55 version I hardly ever attached the daypack and bought the 40L for cheap to overhead compliant and always use that.
With that being said the daypack that came with with the 55 is amazing and I use it all the time at home and while traveling with the 40L. The things that allow it to attach make is super versiatial, the hip straps can be stuffed when in a city, the shoulder are super adjustable and it can almost be worn as a sling over the shoulder when caring the 40L bag, the pocket that the shoulder straps are supposed to pack into is great for carry your trash. So all things being equal with the 40L bags I would get the the 55 for the daypack but IDK how they compare

I've been rocking my Porter 46 for about 8 years now. I love it but my biggest issue has always been that it gets super uncomfortable after only 15-20 minutes of walking around with. The Farpoint at this price is really tempting, I'm just concerned about 6 less liters but then again I never fully stuffed my Porter.
