I'm playing this right now, it's a great game but it probably helps to play the first Like a Dragon and one of the other Yakuza mainline games like Yakuza 0 or 6 or something beforehand. The second half of the game has a lot of fan service for the mainline Yakuza protagonist, Kiryu, that I only vaguely understand from having only played Yakuza 0 from that earlier series of games.
So far I like the combat better than Expedition 33, it has a pretty neat billiards mechanic when knocking enemies around that's a cool upgrade from the first game. The writing is pretty funny too even though it doesn't lean as heavily into the homeless guys larping as a JRPG parody like the first game did. The first game is really cheap and great so get it instead of this game if you haven't already played it.

Man who Erased His Name is a good one to play before this one.
Like a Dragon was the first Yakuza game I played and I had tons of fun. I have Infinite Wealth on my backlog but I haven't played any of the other Yakuza games. I'm hoping I can still enjoy it without having to play all the others first...

You don't need to play any of the other games. Like a Dragon started its own story and Infinite Wealth just continues that. You can get some more filler story before this one if you want to play Like a Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name, but it's not necessary to enjoy this one. It's also a beat-em-up game like the older ones, instead of turn-based. I prefer turn-based.

They're adding this to PS+ on January 20th. So, if you have PS+ on your PS5, it might be worth waiting. It will also probably end up on GamePass in a month or two.

Like a dragon was awesome.
I need to play all the other Yakuza games also but new ones have come out since. They're making them faster than I can play them.
