here's what i learned that made me get rid of these: (spoiler alert - their only selling point is their primary source of failure)

if you are home and need guided to the flashlight when the power goes out these are great.

if you are either not there or sleeping etc when the power goes out these turn themselves on and are DEAD when you need them

once ALL of your emergency flashlights are dead when you need them you'll not view them as quite as cool

I had a number of similiar lights over the decades (not Energizer brand) For some reason they all failed after a few years left plugged in without any use at all, and when they're really needed they simply don't work.

I have had 2 of these plugged into hallway outlets. Just over a year without use. Power went out during winter storm. These did not come on automatically. They still function as an okay flashlight once I pulled it from the wall.

If you keep them in the OFF position, the light will not automatically turn on in a power outage.

If kept in the ON position, they will do what you described.

I did buy the 3pk for $18.34 on the last deal. We will be using them, but will be going a different direction for future power outage needs due to the measly 3hr battery life.

The purpose of these are if you are home, these automatically light up so you are not in the dark and can either flip the breakers or go grab a real flashlight/lantern.

From what posted, people need to adjust their expectation of what this is for. Sounds like if you always set it to ON so it will turn on during power failure, this is good if you are actually at home at night (or dark inside the apartment that has no direct access to window). May be during nature disaster, fire, etc, and/or power/light went out, you need some light to guide you to exit quickly to get out of harms way. This is good for that. Kind of like inside airplane, during emergency, they will turn on the guiding light on the floor of the plane to lead you to exit quickly.

If you want this to be light you can actually use during emergency and don't need to be on right away during power failure, then just switch this to OFF instead when charging.

Pretty much if you are not the target audience to use this as guiding light during the start of power outage, then this may not be the flashlight for you since likely there are better choice.

So funny seeing this on here today.. I just tossed one in the trash yesterday.
Went to use it as a flashlight and when I unplugged it, it was concerningly hot to the touch.
Guessing the battery is no longer any good and it just sits there constantly trying to charge.

Every member of the household has a light on their phone, should be plenty sufficient to get you around to set up the generator, get out a lantern, light a candle, etc... I guess I just don't see the need for a dedicated light specifically for power outages, seems strange.
