These are crap. That's probably why they are blowing them out. There is almost no parrafin. You need 2 to do the job of one Rutland Safe-lite. 144 of those are around 25$ that makes tem still a better deal than this.

got a pack. I normally use paper towels soaked in bacon grease (I'm so cheap, I save 'em from when I cook bacon!), but sometimes they go out, so I figured I'd try adding a little 1/2 square of this stuff to speed things up.

I break pieces in half and still get reliable fires. Maybe you aren't starting yours very efficiently.

You really barely need something like this for a properly laid wood fire. We use them for starting pellet stoves. I think you're right about efficiency in general. I was thinking of all the folks using them for charcoal. Half of one of these won't cut it.

These suck at starting charcoal. They just don't have enough energy content per brick. There's been times where I've had to use 4+ to get a chimney to light. Sure, I could layer in some kindling or whatever, but I don't have to with better starters.

I've had pretty good luck with the Weber paraffin cubes - one cube consistently lights a chimney full of briquettes and two for a chimney of lump.

I use these types of firestarters all the time for briquettes and have had no issues getting a full Weber chimney lit with 1 square. Kingsford blue, B&B, and even cheap Cowboy. Also use them to light my wood stove, but for that I use 2 or 3.

Yeah. 1 works just fine with a chimney. I usually do 2 cotton balls soaked in alcohol. Costs like $0.02 or $0.03 for a fire. Nothing is better or cheaper. I use firestarters like this for campfires, really. They're much easier to transport and pretty much waterproof.
