I've been with T-Mobile for roughly 25 years and it's been ages since I've purchased a phone from them (even these "free" deals). By the time they tack on the connection charge, plus tax, plus the opportunity cost of being locked in for 2 years, I end up being ahead by getting in on an mvno phone deal that unlocks in 60 days. I get better (unlocked!) phones and I can leave whenever I want.
I'm obviously not a carrier jumper, but with the shenanigans that T-Mobile has been pulling lately, my loyalty is waning and I don't I think it's a good idea to be tied to them for another 2 years.
Even if the screen resolution changes, many launchers will allow you to adjust the icon size, so they can still have their big icons, if that's what they prefer. It cuts way down on questions and phone calls, if you are their tech support.
Add 2nd month service on the $35 plan ($35 x 2 = $70 for 2 phones). Total cost of $145 for 2 phones.
ST unlocks after 60 days active service, so cost per phone unlocked works out at $72.5
No trade in needed, no activation fee of $35, no need to get locked in for bill credits. The Snapdragon Gen 3 CPU on the Moto G stylus is better than the Exynos 1330, 8 GB RAM on the Moto G vs 4 GB on the T-mo offer (A17 does have a 8GB variant of the 128GB storage model, but that's not on offer here).
