I've done this twice.

Things to know:
It's good for 30 days from the time you first use it. It's not 30 days of travel.

- a limited number of USARail pass riders are allowed on any given train. Book early!

- Be flexible. If you miss a connection (even if it's Amtrak's fault) rebooking can be a big problem.

- if you are going to a station with a lounge pay the extra $20 for a lounge pass. Showers, snacks, and they watch your bags.

It's if you get on and off the train, even if it's due to a connection. So if you have to change trains it counts as a new segment.

Great deal, especially for someone who has planned time off for the world cup. No blackout dates.

Be mindful of the route restrictions, especially the limit of two roundtrips between the same stations, including all intermediate stations.

Good info:
"Can I cancel my pass and get a refund?
An unused rail pass is fully refundable if requested within pass validity period (120 days) and no segments have been booked. If you have booked travel, your pass is also fully refundable up to 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the first booked segment. A 25% cancelation fee applies if the refund request is made inside 48 hours of scheduled departure of the first booked segment. Your pass is non-refundable following the scheduled departure of the first booked segment."

I never took an Amtrak before. And the writing is a bit confusing, especially the 'segment' thing.

For a pass, it's not unlimited ride.

How much distance is a 'segment'?

I think this means you can't use one Rail pass for two people (each using 5 segments), anyone know?

"Up to 2 trip confirmations per travel day; once in each direction, when traveling on Multi-Ride Passes."

The 10 segments (or e-tickets) of the US rail pass are stored in one's Amtrak App.

One should not share any segment of the pass with others,
unless one has a deep pocket to risk a big fine when caught.

I did that. Spent a month traveling the country visiting friends & family. Great transition.

Just input random ideas on their site. For instance, I live in San Antonio. My brother is in Jacksonville. Some future date a couple months out is a 70h 44m estimated time, considered "2 segments" as is the return (73h 13m); both include taking you to Chicago first lol if you can figure out something to do (famous restaurants or shops?) while briefly there.. For comparison, it was about 16 hours 20 minutes (~1050 miles each way) when I just drove mostly i10 five years ago and maybe 18 hours 30 minutes (thanks Houston traffic!) on the way back. If I was retired, unemployed or on a sabbatical, this rail pass must be a hugely fun experience at a great price: I wouldn't mind getting an idea of what my grandmother saw 30+ years ago taking Amtrak up and down the east coast. As somebody who lived through the Great Depression, she surely would have loved slickdeals had she been much younger! Amtrak had to be cheaper than a plane for when she chose between the two 😀
