60 pod packs are better deal at $1/pod if you actually want a cup of coffee. The single espresso pods are tiny so the $/pod being cheaper isn't saving you much since when you want a normal sized cup you use two pods.

Why are these so expensive? My sister-in-law brought these from Italy during her last trip and they were around $0.50 per pod.

Their patent hasn't reached the end date for the Vertuo pods in the US yet. Once that happens, there will be 3rd party capsules. At the moment, they only let Starbucks make their own, but they're as expensive as the Nespresso ones.
