The 2024 Moto G Power for $95 at Best Buy when you add the $26 Visible SIM. While not technically cheaper, it would be my suggestion. Some have reported being able to not pickup the SIM and just getting the phone for discounted price, which would be $70 if it worked out. No 365 day wait to get it unlocked, and the 2024 is a better device in some specs.
Reported Issues and User Experiences
Automatic Unlock Failures: Many users report that phones do not automatically unlock after 365 days as promised. Some have had to contact customer service multiple times, only to be told the phone is unlocked when it still shows carrier restrictions.
Misleading Information from Support: There are frequent reports of customer service representatives incorrectly stating that continuous paid service is required for the full year, even though the written policy focuses on the activation date.
Carrier Blocking: Some users have filed FCC complaints after T-Mobile/Metro allegedly blocked unlock approvals despite the 365-day requirement being met.Server Connection Errors: Users attempting to use the "Permanent Unlock" button in settings often encounter "Server not responding" or "Data corrupted" errors, which can prevent the unlock even if the device is technically eligible.
Successes Without Paid Service
Counting Down While Inactive: Some users have successfully verified with Metro support (via platforms like X/Twitter) that their unlock "countdown" was still progressing even after they cancelled their service shortly after activation.
Confirmed Early Unlocks: Occasionally, users have found their devices unlocked even earlier than 365 days (e.g., after 180 days) despite the new policy, though this is inconsistent and not guaranteed.

Simple. Phone unlocks 365 days from date of first paid activation.
Maintaining service is not required. Period.
Will NOT work on T-Mobile. Only Metro.

AI Summary:While Metro by T-Mobile's official policy currently relies on the time elapsed since activation (365 days) rather than continuous paid service, users have reported a mix of successful unlocks and significant hurdles when attempting to unlock devices without maintaining an active plan for the full year.

I called them and expressed my concern because I travel. The representative said "I see you been with us 15+ years. I can unlock that for you right now free of charge" I was floored, past few years verizon has been amazing with customer service.
