This set is never $363. On Amazon it often fluctuates between $125 to $160, give or take. Super misleading. But $97 is a good price.

Came here to say the retail price is over-inflated. I never seen a tap and die set like this, cost that much. $99 appears to be a decent price.

Anyone have direct comparisons between this set and comparable HF offerings? Looking for a good "starting" set. TIA.

I would stay away from cheap taps. One breaks in the hole and you spend a day getting it out. Speaking from experience

Gearwrench is usually pretty respectable. Its not on par with Snap-on or Mac but for a DYI they work. I get HF for 1 use gotta fix it now but probably not gonna use it again jobs. Tap and Die sets are import. You can ruin an expensive item with a bad job. The metal is harder than most drill bits so it very difficult if they break mid job.

The 75 pc craftsman set was the YouTube farmer's top pick, and is also on sale for $100 via Sears.

I think HF may have more than one set, but I owned the basic one in the gray case before I bought this one and this one is much better than that.

Ha. That was a ridiculous unicorn deal. I posted that one.
I doubt you'll ever be able to get such a high quality, complete tap and die set for that cheap again.
I've used that 114pc gearwrench set extensively since purchasing, and have been extremely happy with it.
This 77pc set for $90 seems like a pretty good deal, but it's hard to get really excited about it for those of us that got in on the 114pc for $130.

Thanks, I'll go check his review. Was this set (or other comparable GW) included in that?

It's 2026, why are they wasting space with SAE?

Yeah this set was also in the review. GW did well but Irwin and Craftsman were better.

Probably true. I made do with only a Jawco #1278 NC/NF rethread die and file set, and a hodgepodge of loose taps and dies for years until I ordered that Grearwrench set. But it's been really nice having virtually any Tap or Die that most shade tree mechanics will ever need, all in one case.
