Glad OP was honest in pointing out the MSRP of $79.99 as the pointless price. Nintendo really screwed themselves trying to brand their products as "premium" during the Switch 2 launch, and are now in damage control mode now that sales have cratered in this post-holiday lull period.

I hate Nintendo's brand of extreme greediness as much as the next guy, but acting like it's done anything but pay off for them is not being honest with yourself. They've done really well not only with the loyal fanbois but with pretty much everyone. I'm priced out, and don't like their way of doing business, but they are doing great without me.

I don't follow the economics perspective of things when it comes to Nintendo, but I'm priced out as well. I don't play video games much these days, but when I do purchase them, I'm much more likely to jump on sales in the $15-30 range, which usually winds up being PlayStation games. I've owned every system since the NES days, so will continue to buy Nintendo product, but certainly will not build a vast library of their games as I've done in the past, and will patiently wait for good sales. I really don't care of the "fanboys" you mention as every genre of collecting and fandom has folks buying up stuff and posting their hauls online (Disney and Star Wars fanatics are also in this fandom categoriy that I also find odd). To each their own base on their interests, income, and budget.

I think we're spoiled by Sony dropping the average new-release game price back down to 49.99$ with the original PS1 and that sticking for so many years. I remember Nobunaga's Ambition being 59.99$ back in 1989 for the NES - would be like paying 150$ today. Then... Phantasy Star 2 the next year for 79.99$ would end up being nearly 200$ today. I owned both and couldn't have an extensive game collection due to just how high the cost was for new games. Renting was key for a lot of games so you didn't burn money on a terrible game. No argument or anything - just also remembering how it was so many years ago Smilie.

New systems and games are always expensive in the first year. No reason to discount when demand is sky high
