I own this and it works great. You aren't forced to use the app. But I purchased it solely to use the app as it's much easier to track your results long term and it charts it out nicely.

And if you don't want to use batteries you can simply get an AC adaptor for like $12

Yeah but it's regarded how everything is app and battery based. I need to be able to plug this thing into the wall, not have to worry about logging into the app after every update and finding batteries for it after 2Y.
Update?
It takes 4 x AA batteries. Did I miss something about the battery supply chain?

Considering this now that the Welch Allyn BP app doesn't work on Android anymore.

Do you really need the app for this?
Can't you just look at the results on the device?

Yes, you can view the results on the device without the app

I love the bluetooth Omron app. Very easy to track your BP, take a screenshot and send to your doctor.

Omron. This brand of equipment is in a lot of physicians offices. My older version of this has been working for at least 5 years.

I have the earlier non BT version of this. Very nice. Both have capability to store 14 reading in memory too.
Interesting comments about the false low battery readings. Mine does it too.
