I did not see FAA Registration requirement as a big issue for >250g drones. Its fast and cheap.

You are still required to follow local laws regardless of weight and most local laws dont care if you are flying Neo or Avata.

In most places you are not allowed to launch from National or State parks. In many places youre not allowed to launch from county or city parks. That often but not always includes beachside.

You will have same challenges getting permission to fly your drone in US or Europe regardless of its weight (as long as its below the "commercial" weight).

In other words,I would only look at price, features and battery life as tradeoffs for your decision, not FAA registration requirements

I am also curious about the Avata 2 vs Neo 2. I have a Mavic Air 2 i use cinematic stuff so I'm looking to dip my toe in to FPV. I'm leaning toward the Neo 2 with the N3 Goggles but I also have to pick up the regular controller so that I can do Object tracking (as far as I understand you need that kind of controller to "unlock" that feature as otherwise you only get person tracking).

Registration is massively overblown. And this is coming from someone who is wary of it. It was 5$ for my DJI mini pro 5 and took a few minutes. That registration can be used for all my drones. I love the Neo 2 but its battery life is not acceptable.

While I agree with your points, there's also a practicality aspect you're missing.
Anyone who flies a drone for an extended period will eventually crash it. Weight does matter in the possible effects of the crash. Drones above 250g in weight have a greater likelihood of causing dents in things and people.
I definitely fly my Neo differently than my other drones because of its lower weight.
Also, any drone flyer regardless of the weight of the drone should take the FAA TRUST exam (it's easy and open book, and you get a cert later)

I flew this just fine without the FAA registration. Only got out for about 3 miles before signal started dropping. I was near a dense city.

I assume they are clearing out these old models to make room for the new Avata 360?

Sry, one paragragh too long. Baited by (joining in?) the Ban hysteria, policy deadlines.

A tad longer than a few minutes for newer purchasers. In the US, the newer M5P with serial# series 1581FA are having FAA Remote ID registration issues.

Workaround is to buy a standalone Remote ID unit (so it will bark both IDs).

DJI activates Remote ID even on the standard batteries, as DJI backtracked the sub-250g micro-drone category due to production tolerances exceeding 253g+

Agree, still not much of a hassle. I like the M5P plus batteries, and the ND filter puts it over anyways.

Agree on Neo 2 battery time, rendering its max range unusable. But for uptime, the stock 65W charging completes in 1 hour, 2 batteries on standby. Saw the downtime can be further reduced with 3rd-party charging done in 30min, but no experience with that- not wanting to take a chance on that nor 3rd-party 3300mah batteries.

But if unlocking full ActiveTrack requires non-FPV controllers, then the N3 goggles cant be used- need a RC-N3/phone (Neo2 Fly More Combo), or the RC-2.

For FPV beginners heading to Neo2/Avata2, look for the Goggles N3 in a combo sale - I caught the Neo1 Motion Fly More Combo for $419 to get the goggle cheap and crash-learn on a Neo1.

Both Neos allow FPV toe-dipping, even the Avata 2 - many modes, altitude hold, etc. For consideration, the Avata 2 almost exceeds the Mavic Air 2 in all areas, especially if experiencing link interference with its 02 transmission system.

Goggles 3 are definitely superior for any kind of FPV - 100Hz dual micro-OLED screens, lighter weight, and better penetration. If you're on a budget and just want to try FPV, go with the N3.

I'm pretty sure any drone over 250g needs a 107 license, which isn't a walk in the park to get.

Even when flying strictly for recreational purposes?

Amen brotha! What we really need is people crashing drones into people at parks and airplanes without consequence!

Wrong. Plenty of sites that state the conditions where a part 107 license is required. Recreational flying of a drone weighing over 250g isn't one of them. Making money off flying a, drone of any size is.

Key Details of the DJI Ban (2026):
  • What is Restricted: New, future DJI drones, radios, transmitters, and critical components (batteries, motors) cannot obtain necessary FCC equipment authorization.
  • Current Status: Already-owned DJI drones remain legal to operate.
  • Why It Was Implemented: The U.S. government considers DJI a national security risk due to alleged ties to the Chinese government, surveillance concerns, and data security, note Yahoo and Tom's Guide.
  • Exceptions: The FCC has created a narrow exception for drones on the Defense Contract Management Agency's (DCMA) Blue UAS list, which are considered to not pose a security risk.
The ban aims to protect U.S. critical infrastructure from potential data breaches, notes
