After perfectly filling the bell, the butter may be flush with water, but after first scoop, a bubble of normal bacteria-rich air will form between the butter and water. Totally pointless

I bought this last time it went on sale and like it. I went to see why it's frequently returned, I ended up using the AI to check it out:
The main issues customers report:
  • Butter falls into water: Some users struggle with the butter dropping into the water basin, creating a messy situation
  • Learning curve: The product requires specific techniques (pressing butter firmly without air bubbles, using softened butter, proper water levels) that aren't intuitive for first-time users
  • Climate sensitivity: It works best in cooler environments - customers in hot climates report problems with the butter melting or not staying in place
  • Maintenance requirements: Changing water every 2-6 days and proper cleaning can be more than some customers expect
  • Mold concerns: A few customers report mold growth if water isn't changed frequently enough
Since I only started using it, I'll have to see if it holds up when summer rolls around. The first time I used it, the butter definitely fell in, but that was because I was in a rush and just tried to smash a completely cold half-used stick in there. Haven't had a problem in the last 2-3 sticks. Changing the water hasn't been an issue for me, I will do it around the time I'm doing the dishes, which is daily, so I haven't had any mold related issues, but I guess that's not for everyone. Luckily it doesn't need that much water to fill.
Overall, it's a little more maintenance than just keeping the stick in the fridge, so I can see why it's not for everyone, but keeping it spreadable has been great for my family so far, especially my kids who aren't patient enough to wait for it to soften up.

I just leave my salted butter on the counter, no issues for me.

We're frequent butter users and this has been a gamechanger in our kitchen. The porcelain adds class and is also easy to scoop. At this price I'm in for another. Thanks OP

Sweese makes good quality ceramics with well-chosen glaze colors. I don't have this but I have several other Sweese items and all of them are very well made. You won't find better quality at this price point.

That said, I just don't like this style of butter dish for all the reasons currently listed. If you KNOW you want this style of butter dish then by all means get this, but be aware that there's a learning curve associated with French-style butter crocks.

The water seal is not intended to protect against bacteria, it's to reduce exposure to oxygen.

Is the single air pocket not prerable to exchanged air in terms of freshness?
