About this title:
Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi's literal adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, is brought to the screen. An evil sorcerer from a previous era created a magical ring which enables its users to call upon its tremendous powers to rule the world, but it inevitably warps them to evil. It was believed lost, but during a resurgence of magical evil in the world, Bilbo, a simple, plain-spoken hobbit, recovers it from its hiding place. The forces of good give his nephew Frodo the choice to bear the awful burden of the ring to a place where it may be destroyed.

Hmm, personally I wouldn't necessarily say that, especially for just $5. I think what locoloon was trying to point out is that this is the Bakshi LOTR film, not the Rankin/Bass ROTK film (which is the one with "Where There's a Whip, There's a Way" song. IIRC, the release of the animated films was bizarre and went something like this:
1) Rankin/Bass did a made-for-television version of The Hobbit first
2) then a couple years later, Bakshi came out with the animated LOTR film in theaters (this slickdeal), but this film only covers the events in the FOTR and TT.
3) then Rankin/Bass did a made-for-television ROTK (with the "whip" song), which was technically a sequel to their Hobbit (not the LOTR film, since they didn't do that one). ROTK basically just summarizes everything that happens in the first two books and then jumps right into ROTK.

I remember watching all three on PBS when I was a kid in the 80s, so this is great nostalgia for me and a definite buy. Now if I could just find the Rankin/Bass ones...

Be warned if you are a Jackson-LOTR groupie, though, that these are quite... different.

Too bad it isn't the animated The Hobbit movie. That one was far more true to the book than Jackson's The Hobbit film...S!
