I just started looking into these NAS units as I wanted a cheaper alternative to running a cloud/server at my home. Something very basic, media playback - plex, smart home assistant, and immich to store photos. Very basic and what I would classify as simple things.

For my use case, 2gb of ram on a unit like this won't get you very far. Docker requires 4gb minimum to run. Something like this wouldn't be bad if you were looking to just store your files manually. Any type of automation or transcoding - plex - is going to completely bog this down.

RAM is very critical in my use case. These older units that will go on sale will limit your ability to upgrade. NVMe slots are a requirement at this point, as this seems to be where the best storage speeds are coming from at this time.

I'm not a IT guy and I'm not telling you not to buy this. I'm providing information to help you make a better decision on tech for yourself.

I had one of WD earlier NAS solutions. Do not buy. Full of problems and hardly any features. WD is not a NAS company. You're better off building your own server.

"Integrated 1.6 GHz Marvell Armada 388 dual-core processor and 2GB DDR3 memory". I don't know this product, but this sounds as an archaic architecture.

Absolutely correct.
Not even addressing deal, I highly recommend buying their drives but not their NAS. It is an adulterated POS

I have setup dozens of NAS units for family and friends over the last 5 years and can tell you this is an absolutely awful deal.
First, the specs on the box are definitely going to limit it. Second, four 6tb drives will net you ~21TB, but at that capacity you should have it set up in raid with at least 1 parity drive meaning your going to net ~15TB total space.

You could easily pick up 2 segate 24tb external drives for $250 each, shuck them, and get ANY recent ~$400 ugreen/synolgy/qnap nas box and get 21tb usable space with 1 drive failure parity and better performance. This might be a be an okay deal if it was $400-$500 if you wanted a 0 effort solution, but almost $1000 is a rip off.

That processor also likely has the same issue AMD has where it doesn't have the same functionality as Intel for video (decoding) not sure the best word. It will require more processing power to get there. Plex really should be run on Intel, if you can make it happen.
Also if you're doing containers I wouldn't go below 16GB if you can swing it.

I know prices are crazy high right now but you'd have to be desperate or insane to pay $960 for this.
