Is it the 5.0 or 6.0 battery that has had issues.

From the few comments I saw it seemed to be the 6.0

yup, the 6.0 has cells known to fail. The 5.0 HO is the best you can get.

If you need a bunch there was a promo when I went to the site for adding a 2 pack of 3.0 batteries that are also on sale and getting an additional 5% off on them both.

The link is for the 5.0 High Outputs. This is the best M12 battery available and within a few dollars of then lowest price they have ever been available, including through WaySource. Follow the link and look at the deal. Clearly says High Output.Yes the 6.0ah batteries suck, don't buy them. The 6.0s are NOT High Output.People may be confused because 6.0s were on sale a few days ago. The items rotate and you have a limited time. Don't get suckered by junk. But if something good comes up and you need it, generally best to just jump on it.

I don't have any tools, debating between this deal for m12 or look for m18s. Any suggestions from a longer term and tool selection perspective be helpful.

How reliable are the 3.0 batteries?

I ask because there's an m12 vacuum with two 3.0 batteries for $20 more

I'd personally invest in m18 fuel line but 90% of the time m12 will suffice.I say this as someone who initially started with the m12 line. Great tools and nothing wrong for the avg home owner and DIYer but there will be a time when you need more power.

As an example, I just recently got a m18 fuel driver (came as a bonus tool) and not only was the power adjustment feature very handy, it sank long screws into wood so effortlessly. My m12 non-fuel always got the job done but took more work.

The difference will be even profound with saws. Again, m12 (especially fuel line) will serve you well but occasionally you will long for the m18 version.

One huge positive for the m12 line that I'd be remised if I didn't mention is how compact they are. That could be a make it or break it situation if you're in tight spaces or just prefer smaller and lighter tools.

Good points.

I use both M12 and M18 for work. I do need the extra power to get bigger jobs done easily, but the M12 Fuel line is my go-to for most jobs, and fits virtually anywhere I need it.

For DIY I'd recommend the M12 Fuel line, it'll be more capable than most need and cover most things you'd DIY at a lower cost.
