i remember last year, people who did pre-order and mailed in their trade-in's were having issues with getting trade-in credit to show on their account, even after 2-3 months. Think i'm gonna go with trade-in at store again for this year.

Some employees don't care what year the phone is as long as it says the name of the phone that's listed. My Moto G 5G (2025) didn't have the year on there (just "Moto G 5G" in the setting) so they just picked the regular Moto G 5G instead of the one with the years on it. As long as it passes their inspection (clean IMEI, screens all working) it's all good.

I just got two today from my local store. No hassle...took around 45min in and out.
It does not matter whether the employee cares or not they are using a system that checks to make sure that what they have received matches what you are being reimbursed for and what is being sent to Assurant. Obviously you cannot say you have an iPhone Pro Max 17 and hand them a Moto G 5g (2025) and have it go through without issues even if the employee manually tries to select iPhone Pro Max 17. The full trade-in process involves verifying the model in ways that does not require the employee to know the difference between every single model of phone in existence.

There have actually been reports of trade-in credits being retroactively adjusted or denied when Assurant evaluates the device after being received from Spectrum (not just mailed in from online purchases but processed at Spectrum store). Assurant has an agreement with Spectrum to allow credit to be applied in-store but Assurant is still evaluating and verifying the trade-in once received from Spectrum.

In some cases like Moto G 5G (2025) and Moto G 5G the trade-in amount may be the same or less if they select Moto G 5G instead of Moto G 5G (2025) and in such a case even if there was a discrepancy then obviously it would not matter to Spectrum/Assurant since if anything you are receiving the same or less than if it was entered correctly.

Thank you for the answer. Last year the tax was only on the net total. Since then several people have reported the tax in NY Is on the full msrp. So far no one on this particular deal. Thanks
That is interesting, I wonder if some of the discrepancies reported are also based on differences in city/county tax laws. Sometimes different cities/counties within a state can impose their own sales tax laws that can account for a difference.

Has anyone had success getting the $200 or 400 off if you have an existing account and adding 2 additional lines? I am thinking you could just sign up for the lines and cancel in a month or two. Anything wrong with this plan?

I have never heard of trade in credits being readjusted for in store. I know this happens with mail in but for in store, I have yet to hear anyone getting their trade in being charged again. Do you have any source on where you heard this? I mean we even had someone trade in a Xiaomi phone in store and got away with it.

Obviously you can't get away with trading in a Moto and then inputting as iPhone, but these Moto phones are a dime in a dozen and there are far too many models which makes it confusing in the first place. If Assurant truly cared that much about which model of Moto they're getting from the Spectrum employees, I think we would have heard a lot more in store issues from users because many Spectrum employees tend to be inept and they would be inputting the wrong models constantly.

That's why the employees use a new verification system that Spectrum requires but as long as the verification goes through, I would imagine that the instant credit you get is the final billing and not have to worry about future charges.

That's my 2cent but I can understand why some of you guys would be way more cautious. Just sharing my experience.

The $200/$400 discount is displayed on the Spectrum Mobile website by default but I can tell you as an existing customer I tried adding two lines but the checkout page did not show the $200/$400 discount. You could try testing online also but from my testing it is a no go.

I've never seen anyone post that an in store trade in credit got clawed back by spectrum. I feel pretty confident based on the email I got before I left the store that my trade in process is complete.

You are effectively agreeing with me, the system Spectrum currently uses has several checks in place that makes it pretty impossible for them to screw up. Assurant is the company that is receiving and processing all device and is involved in processes such as reselling. Spectrum is not just throwing the devices away in the garbage after processing them. My point is that simply entering the device as a Moto G 5G instead of Moto G 5G (2025) does not mean that the device was actually processed incorrectly or for the incorrect trade-in amount. What is occurring on the backend may be different than what you as a customer are perceiving thinking that the employees do not care whether they get the model right or wrong.

Has Spectrum store given you incorrect credit ever? I did not say they commonly adjust, I said their system is designed to prevent issues and is foolproof for employees. Their is an initial evaluation by Spectrum employees and then a second assessment when Assurant receives. If Assurant is expecting an iPhone 17 Pro Max and receives a iPhone 7 then your credit can be adjusted or removed. The reason this has never happened to you is that they system has never made such a mistake.

Online it happens more often because people are self-selecting devices and condition and can make mistakes entering IMEI number and there is no system checking before accepting like instore so chances of mistake and rejection are significantly more common.

You can certainly call and ask Spectrum/Assurant yourself to go over the terms of the trade-in and process with you.

Yeah I've been doing the trade in in store since the S23 days and haven't had a single issue. I'm 100% sure that the employees sometimes didn't put the right models but I still got the credits lol

I did more mail in then in store but I did have a problem once couple years ago. Fighting for that sucked.

Please stop speculating on theories. The trade in checking app is simply checking for physical flaws, not the model number or IMEI. Once the store trade in is done, it's done. No more adjustments.

So your theory is that when Spectrum employee accepts a device there is no check in place to confirm the model of the phone being accepted? That is quite the interesting speculation.

You can certainly call and ask Spectrum/Assurant yourself to go over the terms of the trade-in and process with you if you need clarification about how they confirm device identity and Assurant's role once Spectrum store sends the device in.

I mean I was together with the employee and I saw them inputting the wrong model. I even corrected them by telling them the year and they were still like "meh whatever" lol.

IIRC, you argued with me last year as well about the mail in trade in taking too long and when I told you to be patient, you were throwing a fit about the return window closing if anything went wrong. In the end though, you got your credit and the process went without any issue no?

Honestly, I think you're thinking way too deeply about this but whatever. Good luck if you're trying in store I guess.

I have no clue who you are and that is absolutely insane if you actually remember some sort of discussion from a year ago. We are not even talking about mail-in process but in-store trade ins so I am not even sure how what you mention is relevant. As you know very well Spectrum employees also have to enter details for the device such as IMEI number (not just device name) that is used to confirm identity and trade-in valuation for the device.

Just because a mistake has not happened to you or you do not fully understand what is happening on the backend does not mean that they do not happen. You can certainly call and ask Spectrum/Assurant yourself to go over the terms of the trade-in and process with you if you need clarification about how they confirm device identity and Assurant's role once Spectrum store sends the device in.
