Check online--- they will still be "find my" locked to original owner--- but after reset you can now use them on your iPhone. With luck the previous owner unlocked them before they returned them.

google "airpods locked to apple id"

If you cannot contact the owner, return them...otherwise the original owner can still track the AirPods...
