how well do these newer 5 fret button controllers work on games like betterGH3 and Clone Hero? does it help make you more precise? I assume there is no need to strum? Does it take the fun out of playing with a guitar controller? thanks

Dunno about BetterGH3, but I've used one of these on Clone Hero and YARG. Generally the D-pad is expected to be your "strum bar." It is not great for fast repeating notes. Ergonomically it's similar to the old DS Guitar Grip which was known for hand cramps. It's a neat novelty, but there's a reason CRKD also makes a new plastic guitar.
