So is this like ASUS's attempt to compete further with the likes of Ubiquity? Also, while I get it's a system name, it's kind of funny that it's "ExpertWiFi" bet some bad reviews will come of that. Seems like this is basically a POE switch that leans into what most people already do with Asus routers using Merlin.

Like the other person said, it likely enables you to remotely access your home network from the public internet.
In addition, it appears this supports up to 3 WAN connections. That should mean you could connect it to up to 3 different internet providers, which could be used for redundancy. As an example, if your cable line gets cut, your fiber connection keeps you up and running.

The description lists "with load balancing optimize multi-line broadband usage". That would indicate that you wouldn't just have redundancy in the case that you need to fail over, but also utilize the bandwidth of multiple connections at once.

Lastly, it advertises connecting your phone over USB as a WAN option. This would allow you to share your phone's cellular data connection with the rest of your home in the event that your normal cable or fiber ISP goes down.

(I'm not supporting the product. I'm just trying to explain what it advertises that it can do.)

So I have asus ecosystem in my house and my in-laws. I've been wanting to set up some sort of point to point so they can hit some file shares on our network through the VPN. Is this the trick? Or is there a way to do that with existing Asus stuff?

Assuming both sides are using ASUSWrt Merlin capable hardware I would install Merlin on both routers and then set up a Wireguard VPN tunnel between the two. You'll need the "server" router to either be on a ISP with a static IP or use a dynamics DNS system with the automatic DDNS updater.
