Haven't tried this brand before but a decent enough price to give it a test.

I actually do the same, mix it with Tide. I wash my kids stinky gym/PE clothes and socks with this to get rid of the funky smell and a dab of Tide to get ride of the stains. Works great!

Tide tries to tell you all other detergents are mostly water. Wonder how this stacks up to that claim.

Project Farm actually tested a bunch of detergents with Tide liquid overall taking 1st place and A&H taking 2nd...Tide Pods was 5th. I trust Project Farm...he is what Consumer Reports should be!

Well Tide liquid is also mostly water lol.

Anyway the comparison would matter if comparing ounces to ounces, but if you compare the amount of loads you get it's mostly irrelevant unless you're lugging it around town or something (which some people do so there a lower weight would be a nice benefit).

While it's not all altruistic for sure, having a less concentrated detergent can let you control the detergent dose more easily. Tide pushes pods hard which certainly are more concentrated but often force you to use far more detergent than necessary and they get to grab that bag. BTW this uses 1.3 oz per load for their calculation, Tide original uses 1.25. So, yeah, no.

If you want to avoid water, there are options. There are detergent sheets which are very compact but usually much more expensive per load (from what I've seen, they might be getting more reasonable now?). Or get a powder detergent or laundry soda. They are indeed much cheaper (not really because of the water though), and often have fewer ingredients (both a positive and negative). I think Nellie's Laundry Soda goes on sale at costco for $40/400 loads pretty frequently and is very, very well reviewed (know its limitations) - most of the negatives are just from shipping complaints (fair); folks love the actual product. I also noticed "The Simplest Powder Laundry Detergent" which looks interesting but I haven't tried and there aren't many reviews.

Tide varieties consistently score highest in Consumer reports tests (~84/100) This A&H variety score middle of the pack (53/100)
Specific testing results of this per CR as follows
