Also, which is more important, what kind of magnesium salt it is? Could not find it in the description which is kinda weird.

It's magnesium oxide. I found the supplement label in the item pictures.

Magnesium glycinate is widely considered the best all-around form, but the name itself is a general term for the compound. Quality, stability, and absorption can vary significantly depending on whether the magnesium is fully reacted or simply a buffered blend mixed with the amino acid glycine. This is why I always recommend Albion Labs TRAACS (The Real Amino Acid Chelate)--the industry benchmark. It offers a true, fully reacted, and chemically bonded magnesium that won't react with other minerals in your gut (a common issue that otherwise hinders absorption)...and because this specific chelate doesn't pull water into the intestines, it stays much gentler on the stomach than cheaper, buffered alternatives.

I'm taking oxide 400mg for my migraines and it's helping a lot. Enough to where I stopped my daily migraine medicine. I read an article that discussed oxide is more like an ER/slow absorption magnesium. Excess magnesium is eliminated in the urine so too much at a time is a waste. I'll probably try other magnesium down the line to see how I react. Bio-availability is around 5% to 10%

Thanks for the info. Any opinions on Magnesium L-threonate and the blood brain barrier?

very promising because of its ability to effectively cross the BBB and increase synaptic density. If your primary goal is nootropic (cognitive function) it's definitely worth trying. For general magnesium deficiency, it isn't the best choice due to its price tag and extremely low elemental magnesium (2,000mg only provides 144mg elemental magnesium)...you'd be much better off with a high-absorption, more affordable magnesium glycinate.

edit: I just saw your previous post about taking magnesium oxide for migraines. I've discussed this in a different magnesium deal thread, but the gist is that while magnesium oxide is the most studied form for migraines, the actual therapeutic effect--blocking NMDA receptors and preventing cortical spreading depression--is magnesium-dependent, not oxide-dependent. Magnesium oxide is dirt cheap and has a high elemental weight, which is why it was the standard form when the first major trials were funded decades ago. However, modern pharmacology favors magnesium glycinate. A properly chelated version, such as Albion's TRAACS, is not only highly absorbable and gentle on the stomach, but it is also better for maintaining the sustained, high systemic levels of magnesium required for migraine prevention. Glycinate reaches the bloodstream more efficiently and stays there longer than oxide. Plus, glycine itself is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, so combining it with magnesium provides a double calming effect on the nervous system that can be especially beneficial for those whose migraines are triggered by stress. You can also try magnesium L-threonate (may be more relevant for the aura phase) in the morning and glycinate in the evening to take advantage of its calming effect on sleep and nervoous system.

Worst of all type of magnesium! Due to its extremely low absorption rate (roughly 4%) and high likelihood of causing digestive distress.

What about the threonate version? I feel like that gives me a more cognitive "high" so to speak...

NEVER MIND, I JUST SAW YOUR OTHER RESPONSE. Sorry babes...

I have been talking randomly for a couple of months and it has lightly improved my memory, I feel like if I took it as instructed I'd be even better. My usual is glycinate and it helps both me and my wife with sleeping, staying regular and mood. But I don't think L-threonate does the same.

  1. Magnesium Oxide — Low bioavailability. Contains high elemental magnesium but is poorly absorbed (often <10-15% in studies), mainly used for constipation relief rather than raising magnesium levels.
Ranks worst on list of bioavailability per Grok and other sources. Spend more, get the Magnesium Glycinate.
  1. Magnesium Glycinate (or Bisglycinate) — Very high bioavailability. Chelated with glycine, it's gentle on the stomach, well-tolerated, with minimal laxative effects. Often cited as one of the best overall for general use, sleep, and anxiety.
