Sit on your couch first, and mark where your hands naturally would land to grab a drink. Put the cup holders there.
Ironically, after I finally decided to do it and finished it....she bought a new couch. LOL That's how it goes!

- Tabletop material: Butcher block backsplash to coordinate with my recent living space upgrade.

- Legs: Spare 2x2 pieces
- Brackets to attach the legs to the tabletop
I even got fancy and cut the exposed end of the table at an angle to create a miter joint that allowed me to continue the backsplash surface up one exposed side. The other end was left open but covered up by a wall. Depending upon your room configuration, visibility to the underlying legs, and personal preferences you could do this on both sides or neither.I got mine from Lumber Liquidators:

Using the smaller 2x2 size aids with clearing the baseboards along the floor (something called out in an earlier DIY note), though you could similarly use 2x4 pieces if you rotate them to be reasonably centered along the backsplash piece above. Since my design hides the legs completely (see more below) it really didn't matter what these looked like.
I'm no carpenter, so I opted for SIBBHULT shelf brackets from IKEA. If you're near an IKEA they're a $1 each(!) and should provide a right angle that remains true without any possible flex.

This table has even moved with me as I now consider it functionally part of my sofa. In my new home I added coordinating storage in the sofa's new location out of modified cube storage with added wheels and a coordinating piece of butcher block.
Good luck!
