This 11 inch base iPad stands out as a solid everyday tablet for streaming, light gaming, reading, shopping, and other screen first tasks. The larger display makes product details, documents, FaceTime, and shared viewing easier than on a phone, and the A16 chip is described as plenty fast for general use. It also fits niche jobs like smart home control, wall mounted displays, drone use, and work drawings. The main drawbacks are the lack of Apple Intelligence support, only 6GB of RAM, and a non laminated display, with some concern that newer A18 models may arrive soon at a better value.

  • people who want an iPad mainly for streaming and light mobile gaming because commenters say iPads are great content-consumption devices and call the base iPad a great deal for media and light games.

  • home security or smart-home setups where the iPad is mounted and used as a dedicated display because commenters mention using iPads as on-wall displays for security camera feeds and as wall-mounted controllers for smart devices.

  • shoppers who need a bigger screen for quick product-detail viewing and sharing with someone else because one commenter uses their iPad for shopping and says it's easier to huddle around a tablet than share a phone screen.

  • readers and researchers who use portrait documents because commenters say the iPad is handy for reading/research and that switching between landscape and portrait makes it easier to match document orientation.

  • families setting up an iPad for assisted-living basics like texts/emails, FaceTime, and a shared family photo app because one commenter is specifically considering this model for their MIL's needs and is asking whether 128GB will be sufficient for that kind of use.

  • people who mainly need a larger screen for occasional work viewing (like looking through drawings) because one commenter says they use this iPad constantly at work for viewing drawings and it's more convenient than using their phone.

  • buyers who specifically care about Apple Intelligence support because commenters note this A16 iPad won't support Apple Intelligence features and expect future OS features to be limited by the A16/6GB RAM.

  • buyers who want the newest A-series chip for the smallest price difference because commenters argue the A18 model is a large performance leap and that the extra cost to move up is small, making the A16 deal less compelling.

  • people who want to do serious multitasking or rely on it for work tasks all day because one commenter says it's too unreliable for anything serious, citing power-saving browser refreshes and problematic multitasking.

  • buyers who are trying to maximize value for 2026 and want a bigger performance jump for the money because commenters call the deal weak for 2026, pointing to the A16 chip, only 6GB RAM, and a non-laminated display as no bueno at this price.

  • people who are planning to keep the iPad plugged in continuously and are worried about battery wear because one commenter raises concern about destroying the battery when it's plugged in all the time.

Is the A16 a good chip?
It really depends on your use case. The A16 chip (and its built-in 6GB of RAM) will not support Apple Intelligence and RAM is likely to be a limiting factor for future OS feature support. That said, Apple tends to support iPads for around 5-6 years (until ~2031 for this model) with OS updates and a little beyond that with security updates—although they do this without officially promising anything. The A16 is an awesome chip for having been introduced in 2022. In benchmarks, the A16 does about as well as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, used in the OnePlus Pad 2 and Galaxy S24 Ultra.

[Edit - A bit of clarification. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has a 7% better Geekbench 6 multi-core score and will do slightly better with graphics-heavy, multi-core tasks. The A16 Bionic has a 20% better single-core score and will do better with the kind of light tasks that the entry level iPad is aimed at, as well as have better energy efficiency. At the end of the day your use case will determine whether it's the right fit, but overall it's a pretty good chip. Source: https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-com...16-bionic]

Maybe I'm just old, but iPads (and tablets in general) feel like they're 2010s relics. Phones got bigger to the point where they basically are mini-tablets. I guess they have uses in education though, but Chromebooks and MacBook Neo are probably better.
I have one for work and I feel the same. I really only use it when i need to see something on a larger screen. Otherwise, it's just a giant phone that only works on wifi. Too unreliable to do anything serious on (power saving browser refreshes, and bs multitasking) and too big to lug around.

YEah, agree. Mine ended up being used for some fitness equipment or when I fly my drone (which I also don't do much anymore).
Phone does fine.

I like my iPad for shopping. I can see the details on things a lot better on the larger screen, and if my wife and I are shopping together, it's a whole lot easier for the two of us to huddle around a big tablet than try to share a phone screen. That said, I haven't upgraded my iPad in like 10 years. Only reason I'm looking now is because the 32Gb of ram on my ancient iPad just ain't cutting it anymore. I can't even update the darn thing because the patch sizes are larger than my available storage.

For a media consuming device and light games, the base iPad is a great deal.

Thanks OP. Price matched to Bestbuy since I had rewards to use. I'm hoping it is noticeably more powerful than the 9th Gen it's replacing.

Our tablet has turned into a streaming platform screen we can set wherever we need it. Often used to show a game while the TV shows another. For anything else we use our phones or a Chromebook.

No you see, you buy these $300 iPads so you can distract your children instead of having to parent them.

Walmart has it at the same price. (online only, not in store) I'm not sure if it's the exact same model. Walmart says in the specs theirs has 8 gigs of RAM. That's probably incorrect,I'm not sure.
