This 11 inch base iPad stands out as a solid everyday tablet for streaming, light gaming, reading, shopping, and other screen first tasks. The larger display makes product details, documents, FaceTime, and shared viewing easier than on a phone, and the A16 chip is described as plenty fast for general use. It also fits niche jobs like smart home control, wall mounted displays, drone use, and work drawings. The main drawbacks are the lack of Apple Intelligence support, only 6GB of RAM, and a non laminated display, with some concern that newer A18 models may arrive soon at a better value.

  • people who want an iPad mainly for streaming and light mobile gaming because commenters say iPads are great content-consumption devices and call the base iPad a great deal for media and light games.

  • home security or smart-home setups where the iPad is mounted and used as a dedicated display because commenters mention using iPads as on-wall displays for security camera feeds and as wall-mounted controllers for smart devices.

  • shoppers who need a bigger screen for quick product-detail viewing and sharing with someone else because one commenter uses their iPad for shopping and says it's easier to huddle around a tablet than share a phone screen.

  • readers and researchers who use portrait documents because commenters say the iPad is handy for reading/research and that switching between landscape and portrait makes it easier to match document orientation.

  • families setting up an iPad for assisted-living basics like texts/emails, FaceTime, and a shared family photo app because one commenter is specifically considering this model for their MIL's needs and is asking whether 128GB will be sufficient for that kind of use.

  • people who mainly need a larger screen for occasional work viewing (like looking through drawings) because one commenter says they use this iPad constantly at work for viewing drawings and it's more convenient than using their phone.

  • buyers who specifically care about Apple Intelligence support because commenters note this A16 iPad won't support Apple Intelligence features and expect future OS features to be limited by the A16/6GB RAM.

  • buyers who want the newest A-series chip for the smallest price difference because commenters argue the A18 model is a large performance leap and that the extra cost to move up is small, making the A16 deal less compelling.

  • people who want to do serious multitasking or rely on it for work tasks all day because one commenter says it's too unreliable for anything serious, citing power-saving browser refreshes and problematic multitasking.

  • buyers who are trying to maximize value for 2026 and want a bigger performance jump for the money because commenters call the deal weak for 2026, pointing to the A16 chip, only 6GB RAM, and a non-laminated display as no bueno at this price.

  • people who are planning to keep the iPad plugged in continuously and are worried about battery wear because one commenter raises concern about destroying the battery when it's plugged in all the time.

I like my iPad for shopping. I can see the details on things a lot better on the larger screen, and if my wife and I are shopping together, it's a whole lot easier for the two of us to huddle around a big tablet than try to share a phone screen. That said, I haven't upgraded my iPad in like 10 years. Only reason I'm looking now is because the 32Gb of ram on my ancient iPad just ain't cutting it anymore. I can't even update the darn thing because the patch sizes are larger than my available storage.
It'll be a night-and-day difference in terms of performance too.

Going to pick one of these up for the MIL who is in assisted living. Her current iPad is so old that the apps can't update. All she needs it for mostly is reading texts and emails, FaceTime, and viewing a shared family photo app. Is 128GB going to suffice for this or should I bump her up to 256? I don't want this to be obsolete anytime soon. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Have to stick with apple since that's is what she is used to

Maybe I'm just old, but iPads (and tablets in general) feel like they're 2010s relics. Phones got bigger to the point where they basically are mini-tablets. I guess they have uses in education though, but Chromebooks and MacBook Neo are probably better.
Your just old.

so the A18 has sold for as cheap as $329... so for an extra $30.00 you are getting ALOT MORE POWER and efficiency. Just based on this info I could never get the A16.

Not worth more than $249.
Why? Apple makes less then 100% profits on a tablet such as this.

The ONLY product that apple sells and has value are it's ipads.

Personally, I would argue that this is not worth it due to the large leap in performance with the A18 chip and the very small price difference. TO me it is a no brainer get yourself a A18.

These were $275 across retailers thru December. Strange that sale price has only gone up since then. Maybe AI driving costs up?

iPhones hold their value way more than iPads.

Thinking about getting one to use as an on-wall display in the house for the security cameras.
I have the same "desire." But, I'm concerned with destroying the battery being plugged in all the time.

How are you going to avoid that? Any suggestions?

I have 3 that are wall mounted and powered by power over ethernet. I use these to control my smart devices and music collection.
Can you provide me some detail, or a link, on how you set this up?

I need some ideas as I'd like to do the same thing.

Thanks.

Not sure if iPad has the feature, but limit it to only charge to 80%. Much better for your battery.

Thanks OP. Price matched to Bestbuy since I had rewards to use. I'm hoping it is noticeably more powerful than the 9th Gen it's replacing.
My long lost brother! I also just replaced my ninth generation with this one by having it pricematched to Best Buy so I can use my rewards lol

Is anyone else having trouble buying an iPad or Mac from Amazon, sold by Amazon?

I use this company's POE switch [vidabox.com]. I have Ethernet cable runs in my walls from this box to the iPads.

I bought my current wall mounts on Amazon as they were significantly less expensive than Vidamounnts. Mine are flush mount and I painted them to match my walls.

A Mac mini connected to my multi-zone Denon receiver serves as my jukebox using iTunes. Control is either with the iTunes Remote app or my Denon receiver's app. I usually use iTunes Remote app though.

The wall iPads have their own Apple ID and then I link them to my main Apple ID via family sharing. That way I can control my HomeKit devices with them without having all my other personal info on these iPads.

A $50 discount on a year old iPad powered by a 3.5 year old chip with only 6GB of RAM and a non-laminated display is no bueno in 2026.
