Bagged vacuums are generally better for allergies and heavy cleaning, providing sealed, hygienic disposal and MUCH better filtration. Bagged units require less maintenance, while bagless units often need filter cleaning, allow a lot of dust to escape and lower life expectancy due to the bagless design (dust getting into the motor). Kenmore BU4050 is all the vacuum you'll ever need.

Is this better than the Shark UV540?

Is this better than the Shark UV540?
I agonized over this deal for a few days and after doing some research, I ended up buying a new Shark zu62 for $120 on eBay. The kickers for me were the heavier weight of the Dyson and lots of reviews about the brushroll part breaking off the ball section. I've previously owned two Dyson vacuums, including a phenomenal upright back in the early 2000s and a very disappointing canister bought directly from the Dyson website about six years ago. When the motor of the Dyson canister vac burned out after only a year, Dyson customer service totally sucked, not in a good way. They wanted me to pay a hundred bucks to ship it for service, and after over an hour of negotiation, they let me drop it off at a service center two hours from my house. The company wanted me to pay for the repair, but luckily the service repair tech took pity on me and did it for free (I tipped him well for gratitude). While the canister vac was in the shop, I bought a Shark uv440, which I've loved for the past five years. Now that it's starting to show its age, this Dyson upright deal nearly got me, especially for the extra long cord compared to Shark vacs and the legendary suction power. But even though I'm a yoga instructor (read: strong core and careful posture), using a heavy, hard-to-push vacuum leads to a sore back, which makes me want to vacuum never. So I kept an eye out for Shark upright with a huge dust cup and self-cleaning brushroll, similar to features of the Animal Ball 3. I'm sure it's a great vacuum, but I'll be damned if I have to deal with Dyson's so-called customer service again.

I cannot recommend this vac enough, even more so at this low price. The secret sauce is the cleaner head, which allows you to dial in the head height for different kinds of carpet. On the max suction setting, my carpets end up looking and feeling professionally cleaned with a single slow pass over any given surface !

That's definitely a use case thing. Portability vs weight, power is better in ball, twice the size of bin, no power drop or battery depth.

I still have my Dyson DC65 that is a similar design and I just replaced the filters which restored performance.

215 air watts vs 290 AW of the Animal 3
Animal 3 brush bar is better but I don't have many tangles with the DC65

Is the newer head and 35% more power worth the $177 after tax price?

Then again that is only 37.40 gallons of regular gas these days, In for one.
