If you are the patient kind of person, any of the grocery store date seeds (Medjool - large, super soft & sugary)) and Deglet Noor (not as big and sugary) after you eat them will grow and get you more palm plants than you ever want.
take the seeds, put in clean warm 70-90F degrees of water (like behind your computer CPU) , and let it sit, you'll see a little white nub growing from out of it after a while, then you can plant it and grow it. If it hasn't grown yet, change the water every 5 days a so. Your water may get a little cloudy, and the seed may get a little film over the exterior. just give a light rub and rinse off the stuff.
The appearance of Medjool & Deglet palms are different, but that's the fun for you to find out.
Aside from having your own pots, dirt and buying dates. Your plant is free (and that goes for pineapples too).

Don't bring these indoors unless you want spider mites.

are you saying this because spider mites like this breed or because lowe's plants are infested with mites?

Spider mites can show up anywhere, they can be worse inside because there's none of the predators. However theyre easy to remove, you can get a spray but also just rinse them out with a hose.

It's a finicky breed indoors which makes it extra susceptible to pests, which then spread to other plants.

Not saying to avoid it altogether, but just making it known.

Don't keep this indoors unless you have high light, proper humidity and a draft free location.

Spider mites are a warning and thrive under dry and dusty conditions. Brown leaf tips are another. No plant is suitable for all homes. Do your homework and you'll be fine.

So what's a good large-ish house plant (that's not susceptible to spider mites/ other pests) to fill an empty corner?

This one. Just treat spider mites if you get them?
